What was the Holocaust?
The Holocaust is one of the most horrifying crisis in personal history. It appeared during World War II when Hitler was leader of Germany. Six million Jewish people were killed by the Nazis. This included as many as 1 million Jewish children. Millions of other people that Hitler didn't like were killed as well. This included Polish people, Catholics, Serbs, and disabled people. It is understanding that the Nazis destroyed as many as 17 million uninvolved people.
How did the holocaust start?
After the invasion of Poland in 1939 the Germans settled ghettos in several Polish cities, where Jews were finally prisoned. This is how the Holocaust started. Living conditions in the crowed ghettos was horrifying, and disease, hunger and overcrowding killed tens of thousands.
Why did the Germans hate the jews?
In 1934 Hitler became Germany's head of state. The Nazis admit that Jews were a problem that needed to be removed. Hitler also wanted to make Germany bigger, so he raided bordering countries and took over them. On 12 March 1938 the Nazis attach Austria. Later that year they marched into the Sudetenland, a part of Czechoslovakia, and on 15 March 1939 the German army vaided the rest of Czechoslovakia.
The Outcome
After freedom many Jewish survivors feared to return to their old homes because of the hatred towards the Jews that continue in parts of Europe and the damage they had suffered. Some who returned home feared for their lives. With few possibilities for migration, tens of thousands of homeless Holocaust survivors moved westward to other European territories redeem by the western Allies.
