ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Families,
You may not be able to see all of the smiles around CCS because of the masks, but the joy and positivity are contagious. Having healthy and happy staff and students in the building is what drives us!
Our pickup and drop off flows are efficient and effective. Thank you to all of the families that have navigated the timeline shift and to the faculty. The greeting teams look forward to seeing all of the students arrive ready for a great day! Families have done an amazing job getting their students ready for the practices that are new - washing hands, keeping space and wearing masks. Our students truly demonstrate taking care of themselves and each other!
Throughout the building, classes focus on community development, the re-acclimation to school with a hybrid twist and to developing skills we know will carry our students to greater success for the year. Growth mindset, perseverance, seeing mistakes as opportunities for growth, identifying our own strengths and those of our peers and genuinely connecting through learning and social activities. Much of this continues to happen outside. Special thanks to the Win family for the drop off of stump seating to support our students being outside more.
- K-4 classes are firing up their Math Minds with early math games and concept review, building/collecting and counting with math manipulatives and some classes are including Jo Boaler’s Week of Inspirational Math activities.
- Do you know what a glyph is? A glyph is a simple picture or figure whose parts represent information about a given subject. It is a method of presenting data in picture form. As part of our second-grade math community building, students created Beetle Glyphs to tell their peers about each other.
In 5th - 8th grade
- 5-8th grade mathematicians are digging into how to talk and think about math through brainteasers and number challenges. Students are being reminded that everyone can be successful at math through positive habits of learning.
- Persevering in engineering challenges by envisioning solutions, creating a plan, collaborating and creating.
- Student-created playlists, advisory sharing, reflecting and capturing student voice to shape the learning community.
- Exploring reading, writing and technology practices to launch into an engaging year of learning.
It feels good to reflect on the triumphs of the last few weeks and also to acknowledge the hard work from individuals that made it possible. We have all needed to be flexible and to adjust our practices and mindset. In the center of this innovative evolution will always be the heart (relationships), the body (safety and health) and the minds (deepening the content knowledge and the transferable skills) of our students and staff.

Middle-level athletics are happening after school on the days students are learning in-person. Coaches will be reaching out to teams to share specifics about practices and gear students should bring with them daily. A big shout out to the CCS coaches - Penny Steans, Mike DiNicola, Tim Holcomb, Dave Baird and Katie Bedell. Their passion for wellness and sports inspire practices that are building leadership skills, developing new skills in soccer and XC, provide an environment where kids can connect, be happy and shine. For any questions about the Co-curricular schedules, contact Mike Hulvey, CCS Athletic Director - mhulvey@cvsdvt.org. Those skills listed above are being nurtured in the PE/Health curriculum and in classrooms.

A NOTE FROM NURSE LAUREN
Hello CCS families! As we open our doors and welcome back the students of CCS, we are operating with an abundance of caution so that we may continue to serve the students of our community in a safe way. To help keep our community healthy, we are relying on our families to keep students home who are not feeling well, in order to help keep the entire student body and staff members safe. Please continue to assess your student using the Health Screener Questions provided by the school as well as taking your student’s temperature before sending them to school. If they come to the bus stop with a temperature of 100.4 or above, they will be directed to stay home and the nurse should be consulted for a re-entry plan. If you are dropping off your student at school and their temperature when checked upon arrival is 100.4 or above, you will be asked to bring your student home and check in with the nurse. If only one of your students has a fever, the rest may still come to school without restrictions. If your student begins to feel ill while here at school, they will be taken into our C.A.R.E room (COVID-Assessment-Response-Evaluation room) where they will be evaluated by the school nurse and if deemed so, will be sent home with a plan for next steps and re-entry when the student is well.
**IMPORTANT** If your child has a medication that they will be taking here at school, we are required to have a medication form, filled out by your child’s pediatrician, on file prior to administration. Please contact their pediatrician and ask for updated medication orders to be faxed to our school: 802-425-2122, attention Lauren Calkins, RN. All medications dropped off at school must be in their original container with the prescription clearly labeled.
A reminder that if your child received any new immunizations over the summer please send in a copy of their vaccination record so that their health record can be updated. If you need more information and necessary forms regarding medical or religious exemptions, it can be found at http://healthvermont.gov/hc/imm/schoolentry.aspx. A new signed religious exemption form is required each school year.
Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions! I am available during the school day 8:00am to 3:00pm.
We have loved seeing all of your children this week and look forward to a happy and healthy school year!
With gratitude,
Lauren Calkins, RN BSN

CCS FAMILY SUPPORT AND CONNECTION GROUP
Betsy Lloyd, CCS School Counselor, and Tanya Vyhovsky, CCS School Services Clinician will be starting their family group once again! Our plan is to navigate these first 6 weeks of settling in and building new routines and structures and then offer a time during the week for families to connect with us to talk about what is going well, what difficulties are bubbling up and how we can help support you through this new phase of COVID-19 and hybrid learning.
Please take a minute to fill out this doodle survey regarding the day and time that works best for you! doodle survey link
Be well,
Betsy and Tanya
