Bahamian Citizenship in Bahamas

by Milik Bowe

A saying

The saying goes, “If you want to hide something from Bahamians put it in a Book”. I’m saddened to admit that there is more than an ounce of truth in that saying. We simple don’t read as much as we should. But if there is one thing every Bahamian should make an effort to read, Its our Constitution.

The Constitution

The Constitution of The Bahamas lays out the structure of our government and the laws under which we live. Yet the majority of Bahamians have never read it or even know where to find it. Several days ago I conducted a poll at my office of well educated professionals to see if this was true. I asked, Have you ever read The Constitution of The Bahamas?

Responsibilities

  • Born in The Bahamas to married parents, with either parents being a Bahamian citizen
  • Born to an un-married Bahamian female in or outside of The Bahamas
  • Born outside of The Bahamas to a married Bahamian male who was not born outside The Bahamas
  • Adopted by a married Bahamian male
  • Adopted by a single Bahamian female.
