Rykers' Ridge Learning Commons

Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation

November/December 2018

Happy December! Here we are at the end of another year...can you believe it?! 2018 was another amazing year in the Learning Commons. Ok, so who's ready to recap November and All Things Learning Commons?

What a month! Global Read Aloud was in full swing, You Can Do the Cube, Digit Breakout EDU, Augmented Reality, Dojo parties, and Rolling Return celebrations!

Thank you,

Mrs. Stevenson and Ms. Schmitt

Global Read Aloud 2018 - Final Thoughts

Our participation in the GRA extended longer than the original plan for many reasons...fall break, inclement eLearning Day, eLearning Day, Thanksgiving break, and fire drills. There is a lot of preparation required (behind the scenes planning) to get all the connections together, too. Regardless of all of that, the Global Read Aloud was an excellent learning opportunity. The stories this year focus on young people overcoming adversity. We hope our students listening to these stories opened their minds and hearts and connected them with the world around them and helped them get a glimpse of life in another person's shoes.

A Boy Called Bat - Quizlet & Digital Breakout

Quizlet Live might be our new favorite activity. It takes reviewing and bumps it up to a brand new level. It randomly creates teams then within those teams, only one person has the correct answer. So they HAVE to work together. We used Quizlet Live for a review of A Boy Called Bat and had a blast!

Students also tried the Digital Breakout below inspired by the Global Read Aloud Book.

Rubik's Cube

Exciting time in the Rykers' Ridge Learning Commons! We borrowed thirty-six 3x3 cubes for 6 weeks for FREE...they even paid to ship them back!

Turkey Trot Fun!

Breakout EDU games teach critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem-solving.

Since Thanksgiving week was a short one, we did a Turkey Trot Digital Breakout. We helped the turkey escape! So much fun working together on Digital Breakout EDU challenges during Learning Commons classes.

Augmented Reality with Quiver Masks

Our kindergarten and 1st-grade students loved using the augmented reality app Quiver Masks to turkey themselves. After reading, Turkey Trouble, students colored a turkey mask and brought it to life. Augmented Reality fun!

Coding, Coding, Coding!

Students in K-2 are using codeSpark Academy to learn programming skills. There's a lot to learn when it comes to coding. We begin by covering the basics such as algorithm, sequence, bug, and debugging. Then, students use their iPads to work their way through self-guided puzzles that teach the basics of coding. We can't get enough!

Rolling Returns Celebration

A big "thank you" to our Rolling Returns crew! We appreciate all your help in the Learning Commons.

ABOUT US

Our goals are to:

  • Get students excited about the library space and learning.
  • Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
  • Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically and creatively.

Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
