Module 3 Ordering and Comparing Length Measurements as Numbers
Grade 1 Module 3 opens in Topic A by extending students’ kindergarten experiences with direct length comparison to the new learning of indirect comparison whereby the length of one object is used to compare the lengths of two other objects.
“My string is longer than your book. Your book is longer than my pencil. That means my string is longer than my pencil!” Students use the same transitivity, or indirect comparison, to compare short distances within the classroom in order to find the shortest path to their classroom door, which is helpful to know for lining up and for emergencies. Students place one endpoint of a length of string at their desks and then extend the string toward the door to see if it will reach. After using the same piece of string from two students’ desks, they make statements such as, “Maya’s path is shorter than the string. Bailey’s path is longer than the string. That means Bailey’s path to the door is longer than Maya’s path.”

Unit 2: Forces and Motion
❓ Weekly Essential Questions
- How can the road slow us down?
- How can forces affect building construction?
In the Science lessons this week, we review all the concepts we've learned about forces and motion.
1 Force is a push or a pull.
2 An object is in motion when it is not standing still. for an object to move or to stop moving, a force must be applied to it.
3 Gravity is a force that pulls all things down to Earth.
4 2 objects rub against each other is called friction. Friction can generate heat.
We start our architecture lesson on Thursday. We are learning about architecture and how it relates to forces. We also build a structure that shows how architecture relates to forces using the materials we have in class.
