Leadership Opportunity for Sophomores

Registration is now open for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Program (HOBY). It is a four-day program for sophomores only in which students stay in dormitories on a University campus, engage in activities to explore leadership, perform community service, and acquire skills and inspiration to be effective, ethical leaders. This year's conference is from 5/18/17 through 5/21/17; the location has not yet been released. The only cost is a $195 registration fee. WSCA can only send one student, so interested sophomores should contact Mrs. Werner as soon as possible to schedule an interview.

Art Class Fundraiser

The Art Department is raising money for art materials and field trip funds
by creating student made Christmas Cards through Mountain Color/My Cards.
Your child will shortly be learning about card design, production, and the
printing process in art class. They will learn about these concepts by
creating a Christmas greeting card with the option for families to purchase
them in time to send the card to your loved ones for Christmas.
Each card will be a full colored reproduction of the student’s design on
premium card stock with his or her name on the back!
Purchasing your child’s card is optional but the Art Department will receive
$3.00 for every box that is sold! If you decide to purchase a box, you will
receive 10 (4x5) greeting cards for $14.95. You will be getting more
information as well as an order envelope shortly!
Thank you so much for your consideration in supporting your child’s creative
Arts Education; as well as your unwavering support and your investment in
your student’s learning and future at WSCA!

Attention all skiers and snowboarders!

WSCA is offering the Roundtop Mountain Resort Night Club Card or Night Season Pass. You can pick up a registration form in the lower or upper school office. If you prefer, you may register and pay online by going to skiroundtop.com and clicking "online sales" and then "night club card". (Club name is -4716 and our password is -wsca) Rates will increase after November 7th and online registration ends at midnight on the 7th! Please email Ms. Cornetto at jcornetto@westshorechristian.org if you have any questions.

BBC Information Meetings

Bible Baptist Church will be holding two information sessions regarding the proposed acquisition with the Christian Schools Association of Greater Harrisburg (CSAGH). Both sessions will take place in the BBC church sanctuary and WSCA school parents are invited to attend. Meeting dates, time, and topics are below:

  • October 23, 6pm - Session will cover due diligence educational report on HCS and WSCA (this will compare the two schools in regards to academics, staffing, etc.)
  • October 30, 6pm - Session will include a presentation from CSAGH/HCS on their vision and strategic plan.

PSAT (Grades 9-11)

On Wednesday, October 19th, all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will be taking PSAT tests during the school day. All juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT can be viewed as a "warm-up" for the SAT, but the PSAT/NMSQT enters students into the National Merit Scholarship Program. This test is the only way to enter and provides qualified students with many scholarship opportunities, including full-tuition to selected colleges. All sophomores will also be taking the PSAT. While this is the same test the juniors take, sophomores are not yet qualified to enter the NMSQT. It is an excellent opportunity, though, for 10th grade students to gain some familiarity with the PSAT before entering the Scholarship competition. Freshmen will be taking the PSAT 8/9. This test is similar to the PSAT and to gauge interest for high school AP classes. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Connie Werner, School Counselor, at 737-3550 x.150.

Senior Seminars

While the 9th-11th grade classes are engaged with the PSAT and PSAT 8/9 testing on the 19th of October, the senior class will take part in three separate seminars in the Santos Building. These seminars will cover topics including college finances, college applications and admissions essays, and representing yourself: "Making an Impression in the College Admissions Process." Presenters include financial and admissions professionals who have worked in these fields for a significant number of years. This will be a great opportunity for seniors to supplement, or initiate, their college admissions process.

Financial Aid Night

West Shore Christian Academy is partnering with Thrivent Financial to present the uPlan College Planning Strategies Workshop. This first seminar of AY17 will occur on Thursday, October 27th, at the Santos Center starting at 6:30 with light refreshments. The sessions will begin at 7:00. This event is primarily targeting parents of seniors and juniors, but all are welcome. Do you wonder if you will be able to help your student finish college and still retire someday? With planning, you can! You will leave this course knowing:

  • What to expect when transitioning from high school to college.
  • Why published costs may not be as important as you think.
  • Tips about the FAFSA and its importance to you.
  • What COA, OOP, EFC, need-met and gift-aid ratios are, and how they apply to you.
  • How to improve your student's odds of graduating in four years.
  • And much more!

For more information, download the College Planning Strategies Workshop flyer. To RSVP, contact the upper school office.

Important Yearbook Notice

Picture Day is fast-approaching (Monday, October 17) and yearbook ordering will not be far behind! There are some changes to be aware of with the transition to Lifetouch this year. With the addition of the 6th grade class to the Upper School, the 6th grade will be included in the Upper School Yearbook and NOT the Lower School yearbook as they have in the past. Also, in an effort to continue keeping tuition rates as affordable as possible, the school will not order yearbooks in bulk. Instead, all sales will be done online so the school will not have extra copies. If you do not order a book for your child, your child will not be receiving a yearbook. Additionally, families have the option for several add-ons (names inscribed on books, printed on the front cover, etc.) and packages including multiple upgrades at a discounted price. A web link will be coming shortly via e-mail and flyers will also be sent home with students. The cost of a softcover Upper School yearbook this year will be $45 with the option to upgrade to hardcover for an additional $5. You will be receiving information on how to easily order and pay for your yearbook via email through the Lifetouch portal. There will be two opportunities to buy books; an autumn sale (flyers will be sent home in November) and a spring sale (for those who have not yet ordered.). Yearbooks will arrive towards the end of May in time for students to get autographs.

We need your help as parents and volunteers. This year, we can accept any pictures you take during sporting events or school activities which you believe might be something we could include in the yearbook. You can upload pictures for the yearbook staff to access through the website “community.lifetouch.com” and by using the code for our school. The Upper School code is MVQGVU. The Lower School code is YKWHKV. Once you have uploaded the pictures, please select an appropriate folder so the yearbook staff can further organize and arrange the pictures. A tutorial is available within the above mentioned website.

Pre-K Fundraiser

Pre-K will be selling KidStuff Books October 10-24! KidStuff coupon books are full of great discounts to local retail, food, and entertainment establishments. Books are $25 each. Checks can be made payable to West Shore Christian Academy. For more information or to place your order, please email jwarden@westshorechristian.org. Thank you for supporting Pre-K through this endeavor!

Register your Giant A+ Rewards Card

We are less than two weeks away from the start of the Giant A+ Rewards Program and we need your help!! Giant gives away 3 Million Dollars annually to local schools and we have launched a campaign to help WSCA earn a chunk of that change. We set a goal to register 1000 cards, which means we need each family to ask five friends, relatives, or neighbors to register their Giant Bonuscard to go toward West Shore Christian Academy. The process to register is EASY! Simply, visit giantfoodstores.com/aplus and select REGISTER YOUR CARD found in the red box on the right. Follow the directions to enter your Bonuscard number and the WSCA SCHOOL ID # is: 20565.

Once you're finished registering or when you've helped a friend or family member register, please comment below to let us know!

Parents Prayer Time

Please join us on Thursday afternoons from 2:00 to 2:45pm in the Lower School Conference Room for the Parents Prayer Time sponsored by CATS. We pray for the needs of the staff, faculty, and administration as well as for every student by name. It would be great to have at least one parent from every grade with us each week! If you can't make it on Thursdays, but would like to be on the prayer team from home, please contact Gretchen Carvella at 717-743-4436 or bgcarv@gmail.com for the weekly prayer requests.

College Visits (for Juniors and Seniors only)

  • Tuesday, November 8th-Geneva College

Interested students should sign up in the office and obtain a pass for the time of the visit. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Werner at 737-3550 x.150.

Scholarship Information

Below are a few scholarship search engines you can use to find scholarships:

Good “How To” Resources for College Scholarships and Student Loans

The following site is a new (and free) video course titled Searching for Scholarships 101 Video Course:

The information includes:
- What are Scholarships?
- What Are the Different Kinds of Scholarships?
- How to Find Scholarships
- How to Apply for Scholarships - Essay Tips
- How to Apply for Scholarships - Letter of Recommendation Tips
- Avoiding Scholarship Scams

Each video is about 1.5 - 2 minutes long and includes an accompanying text section as well. This may make the scholarship search process easier for students, parents, and families. Additionally, below is a link to a private student loans guide. The videos are ad free and helpful to anyone planning on going to college. Obviously scholarships are better than student loans, but the information may be useful for the now 7 out of 10 graduates (and their families) leaving campus with student loan debt.
