"One Band-One Sound!"
SMORE News for the Weekend...
SRES Staff,
Thank you for taking the time to review our "re-formatted" Friday Flyer. Hopefully, this SMORE platform will provide for a more interactive, informative, and engaging newsletter.
Our Perceptual Survey results were shared at the CSI/Leadership Team Meeting on Monday. Team Leaders will be sharing out the presentation and results during your weekly team meetings. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or provide feedback.
Additional food for thought...As we approach the last quarter of the year and our instruction is becoming more innovative, integrative, and creative in the classroom—why not with our homework as well?
What the research says—Points to ponder about homework:
Homework is generally recognized as an effective way to reinforce what students learn in class, but claims that it may cause more harm than good, especially for younger students, are common. The goal shouldn’t be to eliminate homework, but to make it authentic, meaningful, and engaging (Darling-Hammond & Ifill-Lynch, 2006).
Here's what the research says:
- In general, homework has substantial benefits at the high school level, with decreased benefits for middle school students and little benefit for elementary students (Cooper, 1989; Cooper et al., 2006).
- While assigning homework may have academic benefits, it can also cut into important personal and family time (Cooper et al., 2006).
- Assigning too much homework can result in poor performance (Fernández-Alonso et al., 2015).
- A student’s ability to complete homework may depend on factors that are outside their control (Cooper et al., 2006; OECD, 2014; Eren & Henderson, 2011).
- The link between homework and student achievement is far from clear. There is no conclusive evidence that homework increases student achievement across the board. Some studies show positive effects of homework under certain conditions and for certain students, some show no effects, and some suggest negative effects (Kohn 2006; Trautwein and Koller 2003).
If we want homework to be meaningful it must first be a positive experience— work that is able to be completed without help and an experience that makes kids feel competent.
Our challenge to you—if you are sending home work with students, is it as innovative, integrated, and creative as your instruction in the classroom?
Wishing you a relaxing and rejuvenating Spring Break!
