Manners Banquet
The kids are ready and excited. Last week we (my homeroom kids) borrowed Mrs. Spurlock's classroom (she has chairs) so that the boys could practice how to pull the chair out for the girls. There were lots of nervous giggles (both boys and girls), but they were great. We also had a lesson on table manners. I can't wait to see them on Tuesday; they are all going to look so cute!
Math
The kids had a test over numerical expressions and they did great. This was a campus based assessments (all fifth grade teachers gave the same test on the same day), and I was really impressed with the outcome. I felt it was a really challenging test, in fact, after it was done, I told the students that it was probably the hardest test they will take in fifth grade (see photo).
We also solidified our knowledge of ordered pairs (coordinates) and we will use this skill to plot relationships. In elementary we call them in and out tables, but it's really the beginnings of working with function tables. This week the students will be finding patterns by completing and plotting relationship tables.
Science
The students used discussions, books, powerpoint (on Google Classroom), to learn about fossils. Fossils are evidence of once living organisms (plants or animals). They are found in sedimentary rock. There are different types of fossils, but the main ones are mold, cast, trace, and body fossils. The students got to create a mold, then I poured plaster of Paris over it so they could make a cast of their fossil. I also taught them how to name their fossil using Latin suffixes (just like scientists do when they discover and name a new species).
