APRIL PTA MEETING
Our next SMS PTA meeting is next Monday, April 9th, at 1pm in the SMS Media Center. We meet on the 3rd floor of the Media Center. Please stop in the Main Office to get a visitor pass on your way in.
At the April meeting, we will vote on the slate of officers for the 2018-2019 school year. We will also take any nominations from the floor before we vote, receive an update on the spring fundraisers, sign up for the May Installation Luncheon, and, as always, a teacher representative and/or Mr. Deitrick will be in attendance to provide an update and answer questions. We hope to see you there!
Please note: The May PTA meeting will be our Installation Luncheon, which will take place on Monday, May 21st, at 11:30am at Square 22. Each attendee will be responsible for paying for their own lunch. If you are interested in attending the Installation Luncheon, please contact Julie Walcher (jwalcher@ameritech.net) to sign up.
If you miss a meeting and want to stay up to date on what is going on, you can view our meeting minutes on the SMS PTA website.
ART ROCKS AT SOUTHPARK MALL
On Saturday, April 14th from 12-4pm, SCS is partnering with SouthPark Mall in an ArtRocks event to benefit our K-12 art departments. Each school will be represented with an art department-led school-themed rocking chair where students will "rock" technology free for four hours as games, competitions and prizes are happening around them. Those at the mall that day will be encouraged to donate loose change to vote for their favorite chair. SouthPark Mall will be matching what is collected (up to $3,000) - with all of the money going back to each individual school's art department.
We’re looking for 2-3 parent volunteers along with 2-3 students per 1 hour shift. The parents will collect/oversee the money while the students enjoy the activities, rock in the chairs, and represent their school. Students will not be rocking for the full hour.
Please click HERE if you or your child are interested in volunteering for this event. We hope to see you there!Chamber Strings at SHS
AIR Testing to Begin 4/16
4/16 & 4/17: 8th Grade English Language Arts
4/18 & 4/19: 6th & 7th Grade English Language Arts
These are state-wide assessments that test students' reading comprehension and writing.
We encourage all students to put their best foot forward on these tests for a variety of reasons:
- It can help gauge students' strengths and areas needed for growth within various skills that are necessary for success now and in higher education.
- These tests can help prepare students for when they take the ACT/SAT and end of course assessments at the high school level.
- Teachers and students have spent much of the year working on increased levels of problem-solving and complex levels of questioning. Students should feel confident that their hard work will pay off!
- A school district's test scores/ report card often times are a direct reflection of our community. When families look to move to a community, one of the first things they look at are the schools and test scores is the first bit of information they will review.
We want to show our community, and those surrounding, that we are one of top school districts in our area. We demonstrate that we are one of top schools in the area when it comes to the Arts and Athletics. This is an opportunity to show that we are also tops in Academics!
Let's knock these tests out of the park!

Student Grant Writing Opportunity
Attention parents of SMS Eighth Graders!
The eighth grade language arts department is coordinating the purchase of a gift from the graduating class of 2022 to Strongsville Middle School. To raise money for this 8th grade gift they will be holding a fundraising raffle of gift card "baskets" with their students.
The gift that will be given to SMS will be decided upon through a grant-writing process in which students will be writing grants to spend the money that has been raised. The finalists will then appear before a panel of building and district representatives to state their cases. The final decision on the gift item will be decided upon by this panel.
Please help by donating a $5 - $10 gift card that can then be bundled into bigger prizes for the 8th graders to purchase tickets to win. Gift card donations can be turned in to the 8th grade ELA teachers during the week of 3/12 - 3/16. Students will then have opportunities to purchase tickets for the raffle the following week, with the actual raffle drawings to take place on Friday 3/23.
Thank you for your assistance with this activity.
