PBL: Design and Connecting with Experts

Last week we kicked off our next PBL unit. Studio 3 will be examining the question, "How can we, as 3rd grade connectors, use the design process to teach a new game to our peers?"

Within this unit we will learn about the design process, write opinion pieces, learn to interview and survey others, and connect with experts.

We have 3 upcoming field trips.

#1: March 24th- EPiC Studio 3 students will go to Shoal Creek Elementary to interview 3rd grade students regarding their thoughts on quality games. We will leave EPiC at 9:45 a.m. and return at 10:45.

#2: April 15th- EPiC studio 3 students will go to Worlds of Fun for a behind the scenes look at the engineering and design process that goes into opening the park. The students will interview experts on how they use of the design process.

#3: April 30th (tentatively)- EPiC studio 3 students will return to Shoal Creek Elementary to test the games they designed using the previous interviews.

Gamestar Mechanics and Hatching Chicks in the Classroom

Throughout the 4th quarter Mrs. Konrad and I would like for students to learn with lessons via Gamestar Mechanics and a 4-H program called Hatching Chicks in the Classroom. Both of these programs are well written and engaging for the students. However, there is a total cost of $130 for both programs. If you would be interested in donating to help us offset the cost it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help with this!

Digital Learning Day

Friday, March 13th was Digital Learning Day. Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student's learning experience. In Studio 3 we chose to recognize this with a celebration video and a treat. Thank you for your support as we have seen tremendous growth this year!

Math Facts Update

All students are officially working on multiplying and dividing within 100. One piece of this is learning to quickly and accurately solve multiplication and division facts using mental math. One way to help your child would be to log into Reflex Math on a regular basis and encourage practice! Click here for a link to the Reflex Math site.

Currently, Homeroom 1 is at 70% mastery and Homeroom 2 is at 77% mastery. Our new class goal is to have an overall proficiency of 77% by March 31st!

To find out how your child his doing ask him/her to log into Reflex. Once logged in ask them to "click on their pyramid" and you can see what facts have been mastered and what facts need continued work.
