Fryelands Falcon Flyer
September 5, 2019
From the Principal
Dear Fryelands Families,
Welcome to Fryelands Elementary School. We encourage your participation and help. The completion of a volunteer packet is required each year from every adult helping at our school or chaperoning for a field trip. Fill one out online early in the year to avoid delays in the processing, as we need your packet back to us five days prior to your volunteer day.
Nightly Reading on Facebook
Please “like” our Fryelands Facebook page and/or subscribe to our new Fryelands Elementary YouTube page and you and your child can watch nightly reading of books with our staff and guests. We started this the night before school started and will continue it all year. The videos will be available all year so students can rewatch them again and again. Let’s make nightly reading a habit for our children so they experience the joy of stories and the bond of reading a book together.
Morning Procedures
Parents, please follow these procedures when dropping students off in the morning. THANKS!
No right turns onto Fryelands Blvd. (this backs up the car drop off area and crosswalk area)
The service road just south of the school is not a drop off point (it is for small buses only)
No animals allowed on campus at any time
Have younger siblings walk bikes and scooters, too, when on our school campus
We ask that children do not arrive before 8:35 a.m., as supervision is not provided. Our school hours are 8:55 a.m.-3:25 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:55 a.m.-2:25 p.m. on Fridays. A bell rings at 8:35 a.m. letting families know that students can be on campus.
Friday Dismissal Times
We dismiss on all Fridays at 2:25 p.m. This time is used for school improvement and for professional development and collaboration by all staff in the district.
Where to pick up students after school
As an all-walking school, it is imperative that we know if there is going to be a change in your child’s normal after school routine and if another adult is going to be picking up your child after school. Please contact the office before 2:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and before 1:45 p.m. on Fridays, so that your child and the teacher will know in advance of the change.
If you are picking up your child after school, please choose one option:
• Meet students at the flag pole (Door 1)
• Car pick-up (Door 3)
• Meet them at the north gate towards the park (Door 4)
Do we have a current email address for you? In order to conserve paper and copier costs, the “Falcon Flyer” newsletter will be sent home each Thursday via e-mail and is always posted on our website at www.monroe.wednet.edu. This will begin with the September 12th newsletter. If you need a paper copy, please contact the office. Read the newsletter throughout the year to obtain important information and learn what is happening in and around our school.
Do you have Family Access yet? It’s a great internet tool for parents to stay connected to their child and the school. As a parent, you can access their food account to know how much money is on their account and if they bought lunch that day. You can also verify attendance or absences, check for updated contact information, and view testing data on your child. You can apply for Family Access at http://www.monroe.wednet.edu.
Principal Chats each month-
September’s topics are Math and Social/Emotional Development
Please join us on Wednesday Sept. 18th, from 6-7 pm in our library for our Principal Chat. We will spend some time together each month learning about our school and what our students are learning. This month our focus will be on Eureka Math and 2nd Step lessons. We will also answer your questions about our school and our programs. This is your child’s school, let’s work together to make it a great place for learning.
We are off to a great start and we have a terrific group of students at Fryelands Elementary School. Thank you for bringing your students to us ready each day for their academic and social learning. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at presleyj@monroe.wednet.edu or at 360-804-3400.
Sincerely,
Jeff Presley

Monroe Swift Night Out - September 7th, 8:30-9:30pm
Pilchuck Audubon and other local organizations invite you to Swift Night Out, their annual festival held on Saturday, September 7th at Frank Wagner Elementary School to celebrate the peak of the Vaux’s migration in Monroe.
Each September thousands of migrating Vaux’s Swifts pause to roost in the old brick chimney at Frank Wagner Elementary School in Monroe, a rest stop on their route from northwestern Canada to Central America and Venezuela. An unforgettable spectacle unfolds each evening when the Vaux’s are in town. About an hour before sunset they begin to gather, circling the chimney in growing numbers. All at once as the sun goes down, they whisk into the chimney – tails first! There can be as many as 20,000 Vaux’s on an evening during the first weeks of September, and the birds keep coming in smaller numbers even into early October.
MHS Athletic Events
Dear Monroe School District elementary and middle school families,
At Monroe High School, we pride ourselves on the fact that our athletic events are more than just an athletic contest; they are events that bring our entire Monroe community together. We are so appreciative of the support from our community and love having you and your children at our games.
Large athletic events, like our home football games, require high amounts of supervision to ensure the safety and security of our guests and players. For this reason, all elementary and middle school students attending any MHS athletic events must be accompanied by an adult. If an elementary or middle school student arrives at the gate unaccompanied, they will be turned away. In addition, in the case that a student chooses to act inappropriately, they will be asked to view the remainder of the game seated next to the adult they came with.
We appreciate your partnership in ensuring our athletic events are safe and enjoyable for all in attendance. Go Bearcats!
Sincerely,
Jeannette Siemers
Assistant Principal & Director of Athletics
Monroe High School
Procedures for Pick-up of Students or Changes in Dismissal Plans
- Only a parent (or guardian) is allowed to pick up a student from school, even if that person is an emergency contact, UNLESS a signed note is provided or a phone call is made to the office allowing it.
- The above procedure also applies to changes in a student's dismissal plan (only a parent or guardian can change a student's dismissal plan by note or phone call).
- An exception to the above procedure is if there is an emergency at school or if your student is in the health room and needs to leave school - if unable to reach a parent, health room staff will contact current local emergency numbers (which a parent has provided) for pick up of the student.
Parents and guardians, with these procedures in mind, please call the school office to update your phone numbers and emergency contacts if needed. Parents are able to check all information using Family Access.
It is also helpful to school staff if parents set up voice mailboxes or clean up voice mailboxes so they are not full. Many times, we are unable to leave a message in important situations.
Change in after school plans?
Visitors at school
Unless you have an appointment with a teacher, parents and guests are discouraged from visiting classrooms to drop off lunch or other items for a student. Those items can be left in the office.
Parents are welcome to eat lunch with a student.

Planning to volunteer?
Attendance
School attendance is a priority at Fryelands Elementary. Keeping students in school and safe every day takes the cooperation of parents and the school. IF YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE TO MISS SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE SEND A NOTE OR CALL THE 24-hour ATTENDANCE LINE AT 360-804-3401. If parents do not contact the school by phone or note, the student is considered unexcused. (The office will attempt to contact the parent/guardian of any child who is marked absent without notification to the office.) Unexcused absences will be monitored and the school will follow district policy and state law.
TARDINESS
Tardiness interferes with individual progress and classroom procedures. Students who arrive at school after 8:55 are to report to the office to receive an admit slip. Parents will be contacted if chronic tardiness begins to disrupt the educational program. If a student shows a pattern of poor attendance through excessive tardiness, our guidance counselor will call to set up an appointment to offer any services that the school may be able to provide. You may request, in writing, a copy of your child’s attendance for review at any time.
