Notes from the Principal
Much like birthdays, school years seem to get quicker and quicker each year. I can't believe it's the last day of May!
Summer should be a time for a shift in schedule...more lax bedtimes to enjoy the longer days, etc. But, continued practice of reading and math skills is crucial. Without it, students experience what we call a "summer slide". To help with this, we've developed Reading and Math Challenges to motivate kids (and you =) over the summer. See below. Hard copies of the challenges will come home on or before Thursday. We'll be competing against Glenwood in the Math Challenge...help me out. I don't like to lose!
Entering grades K-2 Reading Challenge
Entering Grades 3-4 Reading Challenge
Entering Grade 5 Reading Challenge
The Summer Math Challenge was designed to help students engage in math-related thinking over the summer months. The challenge is very simple and there are a variety of ways to meet the challenge: by playing games using cards or dice, playing board games, number puzzles, online games, reading counting books, counting objects or any other activity that gets our math brains working - at least 20 times over the summer. Parents just need to initial the date on the Summer Math Challenge calendar.
Glenwood Elementary has challenged us to see which school can get more students to complete the challenge! It's their fourth year doing the challenge so Glenwood has an advantage. But Edgewood can do it! In fall, return the initialed calendar to your child's teacher. We will have a simple celebration in September for those who've completed the challenge and we'll announce the winning school.
Above all, this should be a fun time doing things we maybe never even realized were mathematical. The website below supports the Summer Math Challenge but it is NOT necessary to have a computer to participate. This site is also accessible on each elementary building's web page under Learning Resources. Have fun exercising your math brains!
In addition to completing a challenge, you might consider setting a goal with your child. My daughter is dying to learn to ride a bike without training wheels, and I'm dying for her to learn to tie her shoes...I'm thinking this summer might be the perfect time to knock 'em both out. What goals do you have for your child this summer? Click here and let me know! I'll check in with them in September!
Avoid the Summer Slide!

8/22: Welcome Walks, 4-7:30pm
- We had fun, and many of you did, too! Welcome Walks start the year with a positive, personal note. Your child's teacher will visit your doorstep to "reveal" themselves, say hello, and connect. To reduce the wait time, we'll start with families on the N/E of Greenfield, and move towards families in the S/W. Look for an RSVP in August.
- You want to see where your child will be coming every day, and the 1st day of school is much more fun if you're not sorting supplies. So, come drop off supplies and see your child's classroom!
- We'll have tables/booths for local and school organizations for you to visit in the gym.
You'll notice that we don't have a Forms/Fees/Pictures day on the calendar. Instead...
- Fees can be paid online via Infinite Campus. If you want to pay by cash or by check, you can pop into the school office any day after August 19th between 8 and 4 to pay fees, or you can pay during supply drop off (though the line may be long).
- Picture Day will take place during the school year.

Field Day!
Please send your child dressed for activity on Thursday with sneakers, and you may want to give them a good coat of sunscreen, too. One never knows what the weather in Wisconsin will do (especially this year!).
EHSA Update
Join us at our last EHSA meeting of the 2018-2019 school year! Tuesday, June 11th at 6:30 in the Learning Commons. All parents and guardians are part of the "Edgewood Home and School Association." We are looking for your help! Join us to reflect on the past year of events, share ideas for future events and maybe volunteer to help support the planning process. Your help is voluntary and greatly appreciated!
See our fundraising progress toward our digital school sign, learn about the many ways EHSA supports our school and classroom teachers, and hear from our principal, Mrs. Boyd, with behind the scenes insights on Edgewood happenings. This is your invitation! If you can't make it in June, consider joining in September to kick off the school year.
There is no commitment, no fees/dues, just a monthly meeting to attend if your schedule allows. Kids are even welcome to play during meetings! If you are unsure, ask your classroom teacher or Mrs.Plevak to get you in touch with one of our EHSA board members, email ehsagreenfield@gmail.com or our EHSA secretary Maralee Boston directly at maraleew22@gmail.com.
We want to include all parents in our efforts to make Edgewood something special for our kids. We hope to see you there!
