Math Moments - December 2015

Math For the Fun of It!

Math is hard work, but it is also interesting ... and yes, fun! One way you can help develop a love of math in your children is by regularly playing games with them. “Mathematics that kids are doing in Kindergarten, first, second and third grades lays the foundation for the work they are going to do beyond that,” says Linda Gojak, president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). It is important to help children learn to love math while they are still young.

Games are a great way to teach math and don't have to take long. Taking 5 or 10 minutes as you are preparing dinner, driving in the car, getting ready for bedtime - will make a difference! This year, we will be sharing a variety of math games you can play with your children. Check out this month's game in the video below. Have fun!

Math App of the Month - Friends of Ten

Friends of Ten is a Little Monkey app that is GREAT for helping children create numbers, identify and compare numbers, develop fact fluency for basic math facts, and much more!

Making combinations within 10 is one of the most important skills for children to master because it provides the foundation for fact fluency now and for handling multi-digit addition and subtraction in later school years.

Watch the video below for a tour of how Friends of Ten works, and click here to purchase this app for Android and Apple devices.
