Victoria's Secret hoodie

by Emily Walsh

Manufacturing process and raw materials

The Victoria's Secret hoodie, that is made out of 100% cotton was made in a cotton mill in India. (Below is a video of the mill.) The cotton came from a large farm in Burkina Faso, Africa. At the farm, child slave labor is used in order to see the best result of cotton production. (Down below is a picture of the cotton farm.) The cotton that comes from the Burkina Faso farms is then delivered to the cotton mills in India where it is turned in to yarn and then fabric. The clothes are made at the mill in India and are shipped to the Victoria's Secret headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. From the headquarters, clothes are shipped around the country to different stores, where we then purchase the items.

Map of the journey

This map shows where the hoodie starts and ends. The cotton begins at farms in Africa. Then they travel to cotton mills in India. From there, they get shipped to the Victoria's Secret headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Lastly, they make there way from the headquarters to the stores all around the country.

Environment

A major problem that is created by dyeing textiles is water pollution. When the cotton hoodie is dyed, over 1/3 lb. of chemicals is used. These chemicals get washed out of the mill and into the water that is now very polluted. The chemicals, such a chlorine, lead, and mercury, are causing environmental damage and human disease.

How to solve pollution issues

Instead of using water and dyes to make fabric colored, they can you and air-dye method. The chemicals are turned into a vapor and then absorbed by the fabric. Not only will this reduce the amount of water pollution, it will also reduce the amount of chemical pollution. By switching to air dye, that doesn't require a lot of water, pollution can be improved and the quality of life can also improve.

Economic

The Victoria's Secret company is getting away with lots of money. They pay very little for the clothes to be made. For example, workers that harvest cotton only get paid 105 euro per year. That is equivelant to 116 U.S. dollars. While they pay very little for the clothes to be made, the prices of their clothes are quite expensive. What really costs them a maximum of 15 dollars to make, they are selling for close to 70 dollars.

Technological

With technology improving, less people are needed in cotton mills. The work that people used to do by hand is now being done by machine. For example, seeds are picked out of cotton by machine, yarn is pulled and weaved by maching, and the machines also have the ability to dye fabric. Due to the new technology more people are being laid off because they are not needed which means they are now unemployed

Culture

Slavery was a part of almost every culture. Now slavery is illegal, so if it's illegal then why are people allowed to have child slave labor? On the cotton farms in Africa, children are being treated as slaves. If they don't work fast enough then they get beat and many of them are afraid of the farmers.

How globalization effects me.

Globalization affects everyone around the world. The clothes on our backs or the phones in our hands can change people's lives. Goods and services provide jobs for many people. I chose this hoodie because it is something wear all the time and I thought it would be interesting to look into who actually made it. This product to me is just another hoodie but now after learning about how it was made, it is going to make me appreciate it a lot more knowing what people had to go through in order for it to be made. The struggles that people go through daily just to make a simple hoodie is very sad because many people in the U.S. take advantage of what we have and they don't see what really went into an item. After reading about the slave labor and hard work that goes into my goods, I will defiantly appreciate it more and think about its background. The technology, quality in life, and pollution is not nearly as bad as it is in other places around the world.
