General News! Week of February 26th- March 2
Farewell to February...Hello March !
The next few weeks will be extremely busy ones for us. We have just 5 weeks until Spring Break, and then EOG testing is right around the corner. We are in the final 2 weeks of 3rd quarter, and we are finding many students' grades are a concern. Most of these are not due to a lack of ability, but simply a lack of effort and completion. Please take a moment to discuss your child's grades with them...there is still time and opportunity to turn them around,
Last week a letter concerning registration for 9th grade went home with students. These letters had each student's designated appointment time on it. Below is a quick reminder from Mr. Burns:
This is a reminder that registration for next year’s classes will be held at the 9th Grade Center on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. If you don’t remember your appointment time, contact St. Marys Middle School (882-8626) for verification. If you cannot make your appointment, please e-mail Mr. Burns at dburns@camden.k12.ga.us to make other arrangements. Although you do not have to bring the white registration form (the list of courses and alternates your child wants to take for 9th grade), it will make the registration process smoother.
Thank you,
Daniel Burns

Our Bobcats One Read, A Wrinkle in Time, is off to a great start ! The expectation is that students should be making this part of their daily Independent Reading Practice. There are twelve chapters in the book, and students should be able to complete a chapter each day, which will allow for the completion of it by March 7th. In addition to participating in classroom discussions, lunchtime activities, and optional contests related to the book, students and families may choose to cap off the One Read by attending an exclusive SMMS showing of the movie adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time at our local theater on Saturday, March 10th, at 9:00 a.m. for $8/ticket. More information to come.
This Thursday, March 1, will be our next Thursday After School. Mrs. Madera and Ms. Waxman will be available, and students should have brought home slips today.A quick reminder that each week your child is offered this opportunity. If you feel they should be attending, and are not, or do not come home with a slip, please drop one of us a quick note, and we will make sure they are invited. Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip in order to stay, as well as an indication of how they will be getting home. Pick up is at 3:45.Thank you for being prompt!
A quick reminder... Students NOT picked up by 4:05 PM will be sent to the office to be taken home by the resource officer or his designee. Students picked up after 4:05 PM will not be invited back.
Zero Period is a great way to start the day! We meet daily from 6:55- 7:25 am. If your child arrives in time to participate they are more then welcome to join us. Hope to see you there!

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week in Language Arts:
This Wednesday, February 28th, students will take their 2nd ELA Mastery Assessment. The following week we will complete our 3rd Reading Inventory, which helps us measure the growth that your child has made with their reading Lexile measure. Remember, the State of Georgia has increased the required passing Lexile level to 1097.
The next few weeks will find our writing focus on constructing an Argumentative essay.
This style of writing will be the target piece for our next Assesslet practice test, March 20th. This type of writing one of the 3 options required on the EOG writing day.
On Monday and Tuesday, students reading To Kill A Mockingbird. will complete our final chapters, and taking our final tests.
Just a quick reminder that students will NOT be required to work on Tween Tribune this week, or last . I would like the daily reading focus to be on A Wrinkle in Time. Students should be completing at least a chapter each day, and should be completely done reading by March 7th. The "Critical Thinking Questions" posed this week and next will come from the chapter they should be on, so I would encourage them to keep up. This week students who are reading a chapter a day should be on the 2nd half of the book, chapters 6-12. Many students have jumped right in and are finished, or close to it! Happy Reading!
Independent Choice Reading Book 4 is due by March 7th. ( A Wrinkle in Time will complete this requirement)
Thanks for your continued support from home!
Science- Mrs. Madera
Physical Science
Students received a copy of their third mastery assessment in science today over Waves. Please ask them to share their sheets with you. Students who did not master a standard are required to remediate and retest. I have highlighted any areas that require remediation in pink. Students will remediate using USATestPrep, an online resource that is standards based. They may also stay after school on Thursday 3/1 for re-teaching support. The retest will be given on Friday, 3/2 during RAP. In addition to the remediation, there were many online review and study guides given before the test in Google Classroom. They may continue to access those to help them prepare for the retest.
Thank you.
Last week we began our new unit on Forces and Motion. This is our most difficult unit this year and requires students to be reviewing each night. There is a great deal of real world application to be found in this unit and students need to be able to demonstrate their understanding of the many relationships in this unit. Students began graphing data using Google spreadsheets.
This week we will be focusing on Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration. Students will be collecting data, calculating speed/velocity and acceleration, analyzing the data, and graphing the data. We will be conducting labs and completing virtual simulations on these vocabulary terms. We will be having a quiz on the notes, calculations, and graph interpretations on Friday.
Please check google classroom for additional practice links and simulations. Review notes and vocabulary each night.

This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will continue working in Unit 5: Linear Functions. We will also begin our transition to statistics and probability. This week’s lessons will primarily deal with data represented in scatter plots and two-way tables. The students will be required to conduct linear association on bivariate data represented in scatter plots and two-way tables.
Please have your student’s login to USA Testprep work the practice problems assigned. This will ensure they are getting the practice required to become proficient at
