PATRIOT PRESS
PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL * * * June 5, 2022
Welcome to another edition of our Patriot Press
Happy June!! PVM Families,
Here we are at the tail end of another school year. It has been interesting for sure this year, but it has also taught everyone resiliency and the ability to adapt. Thank you all for supporting your children and the school.
6th graders are very excited that the “Outdoor School” field trip is going to take place on the 8th-10th. There is a buzz in the air with these students. 5th Graders had a move up day tour with their next year’s teachers and were excited that they will be transitioning to the main building. 7th graders are going to become the leaders of the school so there is excitement with them as well. Of course, the 8th graders are off to high school. We wish them all the best of luck.
I wish you all a great summer. Please find time after we have completed the school year to find some relaxation and fun.
Go Patriots!
Michael Maloney
Principal Pleasant Valley Middle School.
Anna Leeper
Assistant Principal

**** Important Update Needed **** Ethnicity/Race Information in Skyward. Please update this information now.
We need student race/ethnicity codes to be updated by the end of the school year (June 15th). If you are not new to the district this year, and have not already completed the update for this information, please log in to Skyward Family Access as soon as possible and update your child's information. (Instructions are available online.) If you have any questions, please contact your school for assistance.
If you are experiencing difficulties updating this information, please call the school office for assistance. We must update all student information before the end of June. If there is no way for you to update in Skyward, please pick up a paper form at the school office, or have your student take one home to you. The office will be working on sending a form home with students whose information has not been updated.
Reason for update
Last year the federal government expanded the categories for student ethnicity and race to more accurately reflect individuals' backgrounds, and is requiring school districts to update its reports. To comply with this requirement, we are asking families to log in to Skyward Family Access and update their child's race/ethnicity information. There are now 222 ethnicity/race categories for families to choose from, and parents can choose more than one race for their child. If this data is not updated by the end of June, student information will not properly turn over into the new school year. It is vital that this information is updated now if you have not already done so. If you filled out an online application for enrollment this school year, your data should be correct.
Why do we need this information? New laws require school districts to report this information to the state and federal government. While every school district in Washington will be reporting this information, the data will NOT be reported with the names of individual students. The data is sent in numbers only, with no student names attached. The information will be used along with census information to determine funding for schools and educational programs and services for all students.
ASB assemblies and elections, Monday, June 6th
ASB Election Assemblies and voting will be on Monday, June 6th.
There are 2 assemblies this year, to comply with any health guidelines.
5th and 7th grade assembly will be 1st period-8:30-9:00
4th and 6th grade assembly will be 5th period-1:00-1:30
After the speeches, students will go back to their rooms and vote. Voting will be a Google Form with directions to complete it. The 1/2 hour time frame should be enough for speeches and voting.
Students will sit on the floor in the gym for the speeches.
Students will receive an email with the ballot through Skyward. 4th grade teachers will be sent the link and will have to share it their your students (thru an email or posted link or Google).
Library books due back Monday, June 6th
All school library books are due Monday, June 6th. Please pay any outstanding fines from lost items or damages.
Fines/fees may be paid online, or by check or cash (exact change) at the school office. If paying online, the student's ID number is used as the log in name. That number can be found on their skyward student information page listed as "other ID" (also their student ID card number). The password is their last name, capitalized, as it appears in Skyward.

Notes from the Nurse
Hello Pleasant Valley Middle School Families,
For all of the twists and turns this school year has had, we are in the final stretch!
First of all, thank you for sharing your children with Vera Dudik, LPN and I. It is a pleasure serving the children who attend Pleasant Valley Middle School and working with you, the parents and guardians.
Updates:
Medication If your student has medication at school please pick it up on the final day of school in the health room
Medication Please plan on having the Medication in School forms completed by your student’s provider and yourself this summer. You will then bring that form to the school along with the medication and sign it in in the health room.
Medication If your student has not taken medication at school but will be starting next year, please complete the attached medication in school form and bring it in with the new medication in the pharmacy container, unexpired and properly labeled by the pharmacy
Life Threatening Conditions include but are not limited to, by definition, Diabetes, Anaphylaxis, Seizures and potentially Asthma
Life Threatening Conditions/Emergency Action Plans (EAP) If your child currently has an Emergency Action Plan (a form we complete yearly to share with teachers/staff) to keep your student safe at school you should have received a copy in the mail recently. Please review that closely, make any necessary changes and return it to the school.
Life Threatening Conditions if you know your child has a life threatening condition or if you have questions please let the school nurses know. We will get needed information to keep your student safe at school and establish EAPs as needed.

PTA volunteers needed for next year
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Our PTA motto is “Academics, Activity, and Advocacy.” These are three things we feel are important to our students and their families. Next year we hope to host several family activities, fundraisers, and programs. All events are 100% run by volunteers, and we need members to step up to bring these fun activities to our school community. We are very excited to welcome back the Fall Fun Run, Holiday Bazaar, Birthday Book Club & Staff Appreciation, however there are several beloved events that are in danger of being left off the schedule for the 2022-2023 school year.
We are so excited to bring back in-person events however we need volunteers! The following programs are not currently chaired and need some dedicated individuals to bring them to our school:
Scholastic Book Fair – One in October & One in May this event raises funds for the libraries at Pleasant Valley
Sweetheart Dance – Typically held the first Friday evening in February this event is a family dance held for K-6th grade students and their families.
Bingo Night – This fun event has been very well attended in past years.
Spring Carnival – Usually takes place on a Saturday in May and is open to the community.
Stuff the Bus – Raises food for the SHARE House in Vancouver.
Payback Books – Fundraiser selling coupon books to the public.
Family Movie Night – Usually held in the large gym, this requires obtaining a license to show a movie at the school.
If you are interested in any of the programs or events, or if you have any ideas for a program or event that the PTA should look into, please contact the PTA president at pvptapresidents@gmail.com or PTA secretary at pvptasecretary@gmail.com.
THANK YOU!

"Vape 101: What every parent should know," Tuesday, June 7 at Chief Umtuch Middle
Vaping prevention event aims to inform parents, students
The Prevent Together Coalition and the DREAM Team at Chief Umtuch Middle School are hosting an interactive event for parents and students on June 7 to provide information and awareness about youth vaping and substance use.
"Vape 101: What every parent should know," will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at Chief Umtuch Middle School. This family-friendly event will equip you with critical knowledge about the youth vaping epidemic and provide the tools and resources needed to keep your kids safe. It will feature a 6:00 p.m. presentation on vaping, as well as an interactive exhibit for parents, youth activities, and time for questions and answers. Parents will learn what vaping is and how to identify it, and get tips for talking with their children about the risks of vaping. Pizza and beverages will be provided courtesy of Amerigroup, Washington.
The schedule of activities includes:
5:30 p.m. - Parents are invited to walk through a mock adolescent bedroom to try and spot the signs of vaping and other substance use. School resource and Battle Ground Police officer Josh Phelps will answer questions about the interactive “Right Before Your Eyes” exhibit, which will also be open after the presentation.
6:00 p.m. - Presentation: Jennifer Kirby from the Prevent Together Coalition will be joined by Chief Umtuch Middle School's prevention intervention specialist Kari Koller and Dr. Gregory Flick. Parent activities will be held in the school's cafeteria.
While parents are learning about vaping, students can join members of the Chief Umtuch DREAM Team in the gymnasium for peer-led activities focused on prevention.
Childcare will be provided for primary students and potty-trained toddlers who are self-sufficient at using the bathroom.
