The Long Halloween
By Jeph Loeb
Jeph Loeb
Jeph Loeb has been involved in both writing and film, but is fairly well known for graphic novels including The Long Halloween, Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America and Batman: Hush. He has written several comics for DC and Marvel alike one of the DC titles being the graphic novel I read. His son, Sam, died at the young age of 17 after battling bone cancer, a story dedicated to Sam eventually led to a new character being named after him.
Characters
Batman / Bruce Wayne- Wealthy CEO and introvert by day and legendary vigilante hero by night. Bruce Wayne is Batman and the main hero of the tale. He has to deal with quite a few different struggles throughout the Long Halloween.
The Roman- Carmine Falcone is a main villain who is being hunted by the police and batman while also being attacked by the serial killer Holiday. He is the leader of a massive crime organization and practically rules Gotham city.
Holiday- A mysterious serial killer who is targeting Carmine Falcone's family and only strikes on holidays, hence the name Holiday. Vigilante?
Harvey Dent- Dent is a DA on a mission to take down Falcone and works with Batman to try and do so.
Jim Gordon- Captain Gordon wishes to stop crime and is also good friends with the Batman.
Catwoman- Catwoman is after something involving Falcone, but what? She crosses Bats' path quite often in the story and often helps. She is a thief a little too obsessed with cats to be precise on her character.
Joker- Batman's arch nemesis, a deranged psychopath dressed like the picture on the playing card, is after Holiday as well, but why?

Plot
Passage
"I believe in Gotham City."
-Bruce Wayne to Carmine Falcone (Loeb 1)
This line sets up the book for quite a bit of it's plot. It shows that Bruce Wayne, Batman, wishes to save Gotham from evil.

recommendation
Personally, I recommend The Long Halloween to visual type people. The story is a graphic novel, so it's format does not require much visualization. I also recommend this to fans of dynamic, or epic, tales. The Long Halloween has many twists and turns that the reader will not expect and will pleasantly surprise readers. Now obviously, this being a Batman story, I recommend it to fans of The Dark Knight, because it is an important story for fans to read.
My opinion
I loved this graphic novel. I enjoyed the last few chapters most as I realized where the plot was heading and no spoilers, but it was a perfect story for me and my Batman views. I loved the twists and the roller coaster the chapters took me on. There were parts where I literally was like "Wait... What!?" The Long Halloween is definitely now one of my favorite books. Which is populated with books like The Killing Joke, The Hunger Games series and The Hobbit.
