PRINCIPAL'S PIECE

Dear SVS Families,

I hope you are all out enjoying this sunshine! This newsletter has been a while in the making, and I apologize for the gap in getting this out to you all. We had a very busy school year in general, but this spring seemed to literally just disappear. We are experiencing a lot of change at Su Valley. Change is not easy, even when you know it is coming.

We are saying good-bye to some amazing teachers with a lot of history at Su Valley. We knew this was coming as they all neared their retirement, but that doesn't make it any easier! We will miss them. See below in our newsletter who is retiring, and who is moving on to other things in life.

As one door closes, another opens they say. Please see below to welcome some new teachers to Su Valley. We feel so lucky! We have some great new people joining us, and students helped us interview and choose the best and right candidates for us. We will formally introduce them all at our Open House this August. We hope to see you there!

This was one of the toughest years on record, I have to say. The continuing disruptions from COVID, the extreme weather events, and the energy at which we are all functioning in the midst of ongoing disruption have teachers and staff, and students, working harder than ever. I know that extends out to families as well. We are hoping for spreading kindness like sunshine this summer. We look forward to a great year next year, with a few changes in place to help us all function together more smoothly.

Enjoy the sunshine, summer beauty, and time with family and friends! We look forward to meeting new students/families and welcoming back returning students/families in the fall.

Please let us know if you are seeking information you are not able to find in this newsletter. You can email me directly and I will work to get answers for you. Please don't hesitate to reach out. We are here for you. Thank you for sharing your children with us!

PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) HELP NEEDED!

We are still struggling to field a full board for our PTSA. We could really use your help! The PTSA meets once a month, and all meetings are now on zoom to make them more convenient no matter which community you live in.

What does our PTSA do? Here are few things:

  • Gives scholarships to seniors
  • Fundraises to keep money in the coffers (this is writing grants, and has been a fun run in the summer in Talkeetna)
  • Creatively appreciates teachers and staff once each quarter
  • Gives mini-grants to teachers for classroom use
  • Helps grant write for the Sandwich Station and for fresh fruit and snacks
  • Gives grants to SVS for Art Club, Dance Lessons, etc to provide additional afterschool opportunities for students
  • Supports athletic programs with uniforms, travel, etc.
  • Supports the end of the year Bar-B-Que for all students
  • Supports students and staff in general, as needed

Please consider showing up for our next meeting, and please consider joining the board! We need you!

Your opportunity to join will be at our Open House on August 11, 2022 at 5:30 PM at SVS.
