St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 5 - Term 3 (Thursday 22 August 2019)
Dear Parents and members of our school community
On Tuesday night, the Catholic Arts Angelico Art Exhibition Awards Evening was held in Forrest Centre, Perth. It was combined with the opening of the secondary schools art exhibition opening night where an incredible gallery of artwork was on display from students at Catholic high schools across WA.
St Jerome’s had one art piece that had been selected as a finalist in the Primary Art Awards. The judges acknowledged and commended the diverse range of artwork presented and mediums used by all students who entered, with a particular mention about the mature approach to the portraiture art pieces submitted for consideration. Honoured guest, Bishop Sproxton, was invited to present the Fra Angelico Awards, the category that focuses on art that embraces and upholds Catholic beliefs and values. Congratulations to Lauren B (Year 6) for being awarded the Highly Commended Prize for her stunning acrylic paint on canvas piece, St Cecilia, Patroness of Musicians. Lauren worked tirelessly for many weeks to complete this art piece and is very deserving of her success. Well done, Lauren!
Sport Shoes Reminder
Our school uniform policy states that sports shoes must be “ predominantly white” in colour. All of these shoes in the picture are acceptable.
Please ensure we maintain a high standard of uniform by sticking to this rule.
Book Week
A a very special thank you to our families for organizing the students into some remarkable Book Week costumes. We know just how tricky this can be in your busy lives and we appreciate the time, creativity and energy you took.
Enjoy the selection of photos from our Book Week celebrations.
A reminder that our school library is open each morning from 8.15am until 8.40am. Come inside to the cosy warmth and share a book with your children. Thank you to Mr Bennet-Surtees and Mrs Carkeek for organizing a very successful Book Parade.

Plastic Bottle Tops Collection
Envision Hands – Collection of Plastic Bottle Tops
Thank you for the many bottle tops dropped into the school for Envision Hands.
To assist in the Envision Hands Project please help by ensuring only clean bottle tops from soft drink, water and milk bottles are the only tops recycled. The plastic ring can be recycled too! Although Envision does try to recycle any plastic it receives, at present their operations can’t fully process these other items.
This is an ongoing project and your tops are happily accepted by dropping them into the box in the front office.
Thank you!
Donate Your Old Glasses!
Any old glasses or sunglasses that you have lying around at home, could mean a world of difference to someone.
Please place these in the box outside of 3G by Friday 23 August.
You will be assisting Iona College students with their Christian Service Project.
Fathering Project
On Monday evening, ten parents came to the initial meeting of the Fatherhood project, which is an initiative we will be starting here soon at St. Jerome’s. The Fathering Project is currently in over 150 schools across W.A. and is a social group that provides opportunities for fathers to develop bonds with their children and other Dads, through a variety of events that are held throughout the year.
Steve Rushforth, who is a representative of the non-for-profit organisation, introduced different aspects of the project and shared some examples of how it could look within our school. He also spoke of the benefits of engaging Dads as part of the school community, and the steps behind registering our group, and supporting it through its development.
Before the end of the term, we will host an official launch night, where we will invite all Dads in our school community to attend. The date for this will be advised, though it will most likely be in Week 9 or 10. It will be a social event with food and drinks on offer.
We would like to thank those parents who took the time to attend our meeting on Monday, as well as those parents who expressed regret over not being able to attend. We are also grateful for the support of the St. Jerome’s Catholic School Parents Association and the School Board for their support. We look forward to bringing you more information soon.
