AVID Guest Speaker
On Monday, February 20th, AVID students welcomed guest speaker Victoria Paul. Ms. Paul spoke with students about the field of nursing. Part of the presentation focused on the various types of nursing degrees, from a two-year degree at a community college to a doctoral degree at a university. Students also learned that nurses can work in a variety of settings ranging from clinical to corporate. Volunteers were able to “scrub down” for surgery and learned that you must wash with a sanitizing soap for five minutes prior to entering the operating room. Several students were also able to wear surgical uniforms. Disease transmission was also discussed, and Ms. Paul emphasized the importance of covering your cough, washing your hands, and seeking treatment for ailments. Students were able to interact by hearing their own heartbeats with stethoscopes. The highlight of the visit was “Vinny” the vein finder. This device shines a red light a person’s skins quickly locating a vein in the event a patient needs intravenous fluids. The pictures below are from the event.

High School Registration
On Thursday March 2nd, Richlands High School will be meeting with rising 9th graders during the school day regarding high school registration. On Thursday March 23rd, students attending Southwest High School will hear a presentation regarding high school registration from their home school. At these meetings, students will learn about graduation requirements, freshman scheduling, and the course catalog that will guide them through the registration process. These meetings are presented by the respective high school staff members. Student attendance is strongly encouraged on these days, as the schools will provide important information for rising 9th grade students. Eighth grade students out of district that are approved to attend Trexler must register with their home high school.
