Instructional Coaches Corner: Anchor Charts and Active Engagement Strategies
I Noticed…
Several of you are creating and displaying anchor charts throughout your room. According to We Are Teachers.com, “An anchor chart is a tool that is used to support instruction (i.e. “anchor” the learning for students) in the classroom. As you teach a lesson, you create a chart, together with your students, that captures the most important content and relevant strategies. Anchor charts build a culture of literacy in the classroom by making thinking—both the teacher’s and students’—visible.” Below is a picture of Deb’s awesome anchor charts! Way to go!
I Wonder…
What would happen if you and your students always referred back to the anchor charts to make connections between lessons. Anchor charts provide students with a source to reference when working on their own. This not only supports students but saves teachers from having to spend classroom time going over concepts many times.Active Engagement Resources

Commit & Toss
Commit & Toss is a variation of the old instructional “Snowball Fight” game. The key to this strategy is to have every student commit to an answer to a question posed by the teacher. Once the responses have been written, each student will wad their paper and throw it. Watch the following video which explains how to increase the level of engagement and enhance the conversation around the questions by finishing with Commit & Toss.
Speed Dating or “Scoot”
Organize desks or tables in the classroom so each student has a partner sitting across from them. For each pair of students, create a "task card" with a question that can be answered or discussed fairly quickly. The task cards should remain in their original position and not be moved when students move. Set a timer, ask students to answer the question, and then rotate after a set amount of time. All students should move in the same direction (clockwise for example) so that partners change each time they move. Provide students a recording sheet for their answers and set aside time at the end of the learning to check the answers and offer feedback.
