Raureka School Term 3 Week 2
Newsletter 3 August 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou katoa, Talofa lava, Kia orana,
We were very privileged to have had a group from Karamu High School come and visit us on Monday morning to perform some Cook Island dances. They were amazing, please see some photos of them below. This was the start of Cook Island Language week, some of our classes are doing follow up work this week to celebrate this week.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Island donut promotion run this week. Mr Filipo has placed the order and donuts will be delivered on Friday.
Production
Children and staff are well underway preparing for our Production which will be held on Wednesday 28th September with a matinee show and an evening show. Each class will be performing and all children will be performing in both performances.
The production will be held at Toi Toi and tickets will go on sale in Week 7. Tickets will cost $10 each. Parents and whanau will be able to attend either performance although seating maybe limited.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our children to perform on stage.
Wednesday Hockey
Thank you to everyone who has indicated that your child wishes to play hockey, I can confirm that we will have two teams a Year 3/4 and a Year 5/6 team, I do not have any more space for any extra children to join the teams.
The season starts on Wednesday 7th September and finishes on Wednesday 7th December. All games will be held at Unison Park after school on Wednesdays. Children will need to have their own hockey stick, mouthguard, shin pads black shorts and socks.
The cost is $35 for the Year 3/4 Grade and $45 for the Year 5/6 Grade. Parents will need to get children to and from Unison Park each week.
I will now get underway to register the teams and sort out practice times. The teams will be quite large as there is not enough for more than one team in each grade. Children will be rotated and will get equal time in each game.
Thanks for the support.
Front Fence
Our front fence is getting closer and closer to completion- hopefully by the end of the week.
RSS
The RSS had their regular meeting on Monday night and they are looking at doing a fresh vege promotion in the next few days. The fresh veges will cost $20 and be delivered to school.
Please keep a look out for the details that will be sent home later.
A note from the MOE and MOH
For the start of Term 3, 2022, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools and kura wear masks for the first four weeks of term especially wearing them in all indoor settings for students in Years 4 and above.
This recommendation does not include any situation where mask wearing might not be practicable, such as while eating and drinking, playing certain musical instruments, indoor sport, where it will have a significant impact on teaching and learning (for example, students with particular learning needs), certain activities such as singing or drama performance on stage, and PE. In these situations, particular attention should be paid to ensuring there is good ventilation during the activity, and physical distancing where practicable.
Wearing masks can reduce new cases of the virus by as much as 53%. It works alongside other measures including vaccination, good ventilation, staying home when sick, and hand washing and other hygiene measures, to protect our students and staff. Keep up healthy habits – Unite Against COVID-19
Please make sure that tamariki/ākonga come to school ready to wear masks. Students should bring masks from home. If students cannot bring masks from home there will be a limited supply of masks for students who are unable to bring one from home.
Thank you for your support in protecting our school community.
IMPORTANT - If your child is away from school -
Reminder that you need to PHONE OR TEXT the school know if your child is going to be away. Because of the current covid situation, it is essential that you let us know the reason they are away - eg coughing, headache, tummy bug etc.
You can phone 06 8789766 or text 027 557 0085 and leave a message.
Thank you for this, it is so helpful and we want to ensure your child is okay.
BOT Elections:

Thanks to everyone who has put themselves forward to be part of our Board.
Greg
Hello Room 11 - what have you got to share with us this week?
Room 11 had lots of fun celebrating the end of Term 2 by baking Matariki cookies, making poi, creating concertina books and learning some origami tricks to make mini kites. We also made these kites with our parents at our interviews so they could write some mana enhancing messages to support the rest of our journey this year.
We also got to meet Mr Murray Gadd who is a writing guru and we celebrated Harlyn and Nalisha at our Senior Assembly. We are excited for production and cannot wait to hit the big stage!

be purchased in town.
· Do your child’s records need updating?
- moved house?
- phone/cellphone numbers changed?
- living arrangements changed?
- emergency contacts changed?
- medical details?
Medical Reminders
IMPORTANT: Children are NOT to carry any form of medication in their bags etc. All medication must be held in the office. Parents must complete a Medical Form to enable staff to administer medication.
We often have a few ‘bugs’ around the school.
· A common one is a nasty cough/flu type illness. Keep your children home if they have symptoms of this as it spreads easily.
· If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they MUST stay home for 2 days after the last event. This illness definitely spreads quickly around the school.
· Headlice are always around so make sure that you check your child’s hair regularly (we suggest weekly) and treat the hair if necessary. We have treatments available from school for free. Just pop in and we can give you some.
· If your child is at all unwell, please keep them home so that they don’t pass bugs on to other children. Also if a child is feeling unwell they are not able to learn easily and are much better off at home snuggled up in bed.
Don’t forget to contact the school office to let us know when your child is unwell please.
Volunteers needed for supervision of our school patrollers.
The children are well trained, it is just a matter of having an adult supervise from 8.30-9.00. Please contact Chris in the school office if your are able to help (even if you have helped in the past, please confirm).
Launch Pad - every Wednesday 12.30-1.00pm
This starts this Wednesday for any Y4-6 students. It will be held in the hall. All Welcome!
Covid Information
Covid19
Covid19 -We are at Orange level Orange now. We are seeing that cases are declining due to high levels of vaccination and natural immunity after infection.
At Orange, face masks are no longer required at school. However public health advice is that masks continue to be strongly encouraged when indoors. Wearing a mask is a key health measure that slows the spread of COVID-19 in indoor settings. For that reason, we ask that visitors to the school, including parents and whānau, wear a mask whenever they are indoors on school grounds.
We also ask that your child (if they are Year 4+) continues to bring a mask to school every day. There may be times that we’ll ask them to wear a mask, too – for example, when we are having an assembly in the hall. If there are a high number of cases at school or in the community, we may ask that masks are worn in classrooms for a time.
We will continue to keep all the other health measures in place at school that we know slow the spread of COVID-19. These include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette, appropriate physical distancing whenever we can and, most importantly, staying home if we are sick.
Remember if your child is feeling sick please keep them home until they are well.
If your child does need to isolate either as being a household contact or for testing positive please let us know.
Symptoms of COVID-19:
- A new or worsening cough
- Sneezing and runny nose
- A fever
- Temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath
Less common symptoms include diarrhoea, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, malaise, chest pain, abdominal pain, joint pain, or confusion/irritability.
We know how hard the impacts on COVID-19 have been for many families in New Zealand. If you know of a family in your community who is struggling, please encourage them to reach out for support for example to access food, medicine, or access financial support: Help is available – COVID-19 Health Hub.
If you have any concerns, please do get in touch. We are here to help.
