Lakeside Fifth Grade
News & Notes
Week of September 19-23
We're half way through the first nine weeks! Can you believe it?!?
Social Studies
This week, learners will be completing our PBL project world maps by Wednesday. We will also continue to review latitude and longitude as we create a quiz based upon these maps which asks WITWICS? Can we find Carmen Sandiego? We'll have to wait and see!
We also will take our first chapter assessment this week; working both in class and at home to complete this task before turning it in on Friday.
Language Arts
Math
Learners will begin exploring and working with decimals. They will be asked to read, write, and represent decimals to the thousandths. Some vocabulary you can review is standard form, expanded form, and word name. One of our essential questions you can ask your child is how are tenths, hundredths, and thousandths related to each other? We will be comparing, ordering, and rounding decimals as well. By the end of the week, we will be estimating decimal sums and differences. We will have a Decimal Test on
September 29th. Please continue reviewing multiplication facts for mastery with your learner.
Science
Learners will continue to explore basic interactions within an ecosystem including the relationships among producers, consumers, and decomposers. A diagram of an energy pyramid will be used to explain how energy flows through a simple food chain and represents the balance of organisms that must be maintained in a healthy ecosystem. Adaptation activities completed in the lab at the end of the week will help learners discover how body structures relate to functions.
