Language Workshop
Essential Question: How are identities formed and shaped?
In Language Workshop, we will be unpacking each of the books above collectively in a large class conversation. We will begin to form an understanding of the term “identity” as we think, listen, and share our deep thinking around the characters in the texts above. How did they become who they are today? What impact and influence do they have on others? What’s their story?
Reader's Workshop
In Reader’s Workshop, we will continue to study informational text with an emphasis on biography. We will also continue to study the different structures (main idea & details, comparison, sequence, cause/effect) that writers of informational text utilized to communicate their information. This will lead to an awareness that informational text may seem to have a persuasive angle in some cases.
Writing Workshop
Math Workshop
Happy new unit! Our third graders are working hard digging into our geometry unit. This unit is very vocabulary heavy as it is essential for students to understand which attributes relate to each shape. Discussions are around how shapes are classified and the realization that they may hold more than one classification. Next week, we kick start our fractions unit. This is the first time that fractions are written for our students so this content will be very new. We are excited to dig in!
Science
The students are so excited about our new science unit entitled “Unity and Diversity” all about animals! This week we welcomed some critters into our classrooms to study more about living organisms: crayfish. We have explored the crayfish structures/body parts and their functions. We are also making observations about their behaviors. These experiments will help us to better understand other organisms as well.
Digital Citizenship
This month we discovered that when it comes to keyword searches, it’s most effective & efficient to use more words than one. Next, the students will construct their own search strategies to find information using keywords, synonyms, and a variety of words or phrases. This skill will definitely come in handy when we launch our biography research for writer’s workshop.
Second Step
We are continuing to weave our social-emotional learning throughout other content areas so that students can understand how vital this topic is. Our most recent conversations revolved around showing compassion and how to make friends. Using kind words and carrying on a conversation is something that is modeled for our third graders. Students discussed empathy, and that empathy put into action is called compassion. Please see the button below for more information in regards to Waukesha’s social-emotional learning.
