Cottage Lake Elementary - April 25, 2021

A Note from Principal Welch

Dear Families,

Welcome to the final week of April. We have had the most amazing weather recently and the change to rain this weekend is a good reminder we are still in spring here in the Pacific Northwest.

There are a few important sections of the newsletter below that I will highlight here for you.

  • If you have not already submitted your student's COVID batch testing Opt-IN or Opt-OUT form, we would like EVERY family in Grade 2-Grade 5 to complete the form that matches your intent. Please find both links below in the COVID testing section.
  • Are you planning to return to Cottage Lake in the fall? As I begin our staffing process, I need to know if you are planning for your student(s) to return to Cottage Lake in the fall. Please complete this survey below. I am looking for one survey per family.

This is also a time to celebrate and honor individuals who continue to support our school in a variety of ways. First, I want to thank all our CL volunteers for your time in our virtual classrooms and over the years, as well. We are incredibly lucky at Cottage Lake to have parents and community members who will do whatever it takes, both inside and outside of our classrooms, to support our school. THANK YOU to all our volunteers!

Second, this past Wednesday was Administrative Professionals Day. I hope you will join me in celebrating Sarah and Teri! Without them, this school would not run. I am incredibly lucky to work alongside both of them every day and I appreciate all they do to support our school community! THANK YOU to Sarah and Teri!

I hope everyone has a great week ahead!

Take care,

~ Jen Welch, Principal

For All HYBRID parents

Don't forget you need to complete the Health Check form EACH DAY your student is on-site for learning. If the student's health form is not completed upon arrival to school, students stay outside of the office until we can reach a parent. Forms can be completed after 12:01 AM on the day of learning.

Forms can be accessed through ParentVue or you can also use this website to find the link to ParentVue.

COVID batch testing

Dear Cottage Lake Families,

This week, the Northshore School District launched the COVID-19 testing program for all students grades 2-12. If you have not already done so, I am asking you to go to this site to provide your consent for your child to participate in batch testing for COVID-19. This consent must be completed in order for your child to be included in the testing program. When you sign up, you will be asked to submit this unique code (ns-cottagelake), which will allow us to know which students and staff are participating in this important method to help keep COVID-19 cases low and school buildings open.

As the name “batch” suggests, everyone in a classroom cohort puts their test samples together in a batch vial with no names or personally identifiable information.

A few key points to emphasize:

  • Students in Grades 2-12 can test

  • Students in each cohort will be tested every week.

  • Your child will only be tested if you Opt-IN and give your consent at this link.

  • Cottage Lake’s unique code is: ns-cottagelake

  • To Opt-OUT your child from the batch testing, click on this link

  • If a student or staff member is opted out of testing, but their classroom or first-period class cohort has a positive COVID test result, they will still be required to quarantine for 14 days

We have now completed two days of testing and the process continues to go smoothly. Your student’s participation will help us keep transmissions in our school buildings low so we can keep school buildings open. Thank you for your consideration.

If you have additional batch testing questions, please reach out to me (

Are you planning to return to Cottage Lake in the Fall?

This is the time of year where I look closely at student numbers which directly informs our staffing decisions. I am in this process right now, so we are reaching out to gather your Intent to Return to Cottage Lake information.

I am asking ALL Kindergarten-Grade 4 families to complete this Google survey so I can plan accordingly for what classrooms we will need and how many staff members we will need, as well.

Google survey link:

I would appreciate this survey being completed no later than Wednesday, May 7 @ 8:00 PM.

Thank you!

Golden Sailboat and Golden Acorn award nominations coming soon

Each year our PTA gives the Golden Sailboat/Outstanding Educator Award to a Cottage Lake Elementary staff member and the Golden Acorn Award to a person who has given exemplary volunteer service to students and families in our school.

These awards are very special and are given for continued and dedicated service. This is an excellent way to honor Cottage Lake staff and volunteers for their contributions to our students, our school, and our community.

The nomination link will be coming soon, but this is a reminder to start to think of who you would like to nominate for this award.

Yearbooks for all!

At the last PTA meeting, it was decided that PTA is going to provide each of our Cottage Lake students with a yearbook, free of charge. More information will be coming on when those will be available. This will likely be our final week of school in June.

Thank you, PTA!!

Third Quarter Progress Reports

Friday, April 9 marked the end of our third quarter of school. With the pivot to Hybrid learning and Fully Remote learning, we feel our staff have been in close contact with families and new teachers to share the performance levels of our students. To that end, we will not be sending home formal progress reports for the third quarter.

If your student is supported through Special Education services, you will still receive your goal update summaries in the mail. Those will be mailed this week to families.

Glee Club/Choir Grades 3-5

To: Families of 3rd-5th grade

Re: Glee Club/Choir Sign-up

Dear Families,

Mrs. Hanning and Ms. Hoffman will be offering a glee club/choir to those students who are interested in grades 3, 4, and 5. The Cottage Lake Glee Club/Choir will begin Friday, April 23rd. It will be held weekly and virtually from 11:00 to 11:30 AM, and will continue until June 4th.

Being in a choir is a wonderful opportunity for students to expand their musicianship. It teaches them many music skills and techniques such as: singing in harmony, reading solfege (Do, Re, Mi, etc.), and proper breath control while singing. It also teaches them self-confidence and teamwork. These are important skills to know, as they help to develop skills in other academics areas.

If your child is interested in joining The Cottage Lake Glee Club, please fill out the google form at the following link:

We will then send out the zoom information for our weekly meetings.

Thank you for your support.
