Keep Kids Connected Over the Summer
“Peers are necessities, not luxuries in human development.” (Hartup, 2009)
We know intuitively, and research affirms, that peer relationships play powerful roles in young people’s lives. Research points unequivocally to positive peer relationships as critical resources for youth development, including academic motivation and learning, reduced stress, reduced risky behaviors, and positive identity development. Through these relationships, young people develop empathy, care, social trust, and a commitment to the common good. We appreciate that some families limit screens and technology during the summer; however, we encourage you to allow your children to stay connected to peers throughout the summer. For many students, this means access to their phones and devices and parent-approved communication or social media apps. Youth with stronger friendships are 3X more likely to report high levels of goal setting, self-efficacy, communication skills, leadership, self-awareness, and belonging.
COMMUNITY RESOURCES:
The Wilmette Public Library and Winnetka/Northfield Library have a lot of opportunities for teens to connect with peers this summer.
If you are concerned about the mental health of your child during the summer, you can reach out to Haven Youth and Family Services or Family Service Center, two fantastic community supports that we partner with often.

8TH GRADE Service Project!
Thank you to all of our wonderful 8th Grade students, parent chaperones and teachers for their hard work at the recent service event at Feed My Starving Children. We put together meals for over 184 children in the country of Chad. So proud of the group for making a difference together in their community and across the world, so others can have a chance at life. Special thanks to event Co-Chairs Lina Patel and Jessica LeFebvre for planning this meaningful experience for the class.
