Hampton Bays Middle School
Monday Memo #11
What can we learn from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?
Dear T.E.A.M. :
When time permits this week, you are encouraged to share a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. Even if for a few minutes, the wisdom is timely and relevant to the life and world of our adolescents at HBMS. During Advisory? As part of a Do Now or exit ticket? As the centerpiece of a lesson you’re teaching? This are only a few ideas for where you may make the time to share this wisdom, to get us thinking about why these words matter.
Below, you’ll find a collection of nine memorable quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. well worth sharing with your students this week. Guaranteed, when they see you and hear you taking the time to do this, they will stop and think about why King’s words are important. That's the power of a teacher's words right there. Let's not underestimate it.
9 quotes from MLK's famous speeches and writings about
education, justice, hope, perseverance and freedom
1. "Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase."
2. "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
3. "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
4. "The time is always right to do what is right."
5. "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ "
6. "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."
7. "Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education."
8. "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
9. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
If you're interested in listening to and where applicable, sharing the "I Have a Dream" speech in it's entirety, you can find the audio (with a transcript) at the following NPR link:
