Message from Jeff and Yolanda
“Learning without reflection is a waste. Reflection without learning is dangerous” (Confucius)
This statement was the opening line for one of our recent PN graduate’s speeches given at the nursing pinning this past week. The student went on to say that now, their reflection shows a practical nurse in addition to all of the other roles they play in their lives (mother, father, sister, brother). She adds that she “believes each one of us is a reflection and that what we see in our own reflection is what others will see” and that “reflection brings growth within ourselves”.
As educators, we are called upon to reflect almost continuously on the state of our practice in order to seek innovative and inspiring ways to teach our subject areas. Sometimes, that reflection does not allow us to see or feel the impact we have upon our students. The “little things” that make each of us different, from our teaching styles to our classroom management, are the very things our students will remember, some for the rest of their lives. We rarely get to know what the lasting impact is but if we are lucky we can get glimpses of that in what students say and sometimes in what they don’t say but what they do.
One of our nursing instructors was quoted by a student this week, “I simply plant the seeds and watch them bloom!”
As teachers in high school, post-secondary and adult education we are the ones preparing the new and ever-changing workforce and as such we set our standards high, reflect on the effectiveness of the lessons we teach and we wait to see what “ blooms!”
In conclusion, another student left us with this, “Thank you so very much to our teachers and administrators who constantly pushed us. Thank you so much to the organizations that provided scholarships to many of us, so we could reach our dreams!”
Thank you to all of you for playing such an important role in helping our students reach their dreams and improve their lives!
