Principal Kuhn Message for the week
This is my second update and I so excited to share the growth we are seeing on campus. Last week we celebrated Student of the Month and one of things we highlighted - individual student growth on their My Pat. Look for more information about this in the newsletter.
Some quick announcements:
1. We are up and running with 21st Century. The tutoring is really helpful for all students and we highly encourage all students to join this free tutoring.
2. We need more boys Middle School Volleyball players. We are close to having to fold this team. Please get your physicals in by Thursday this week.
3. Mr. Wilbur has moved out of the state. We will miss him, but it does make an opening on campus for a person who believes in our students and is ready to be a support for them. If you have Bachelors Degree and have wondered what it would be like to work with a wonderful group of educators, stop in and meet with Dr. Kuhn.
4. Our beloved Pat Ponce took a fall and will be out for a bit. Please keep her in your prayers and if you have some time to help support our PTA or School volunteer program, this would be a perfect time to help out. Pat is the pulse of Safford and we need to keep all of her initiative in motion. Contact Dawn or Lisa in the front office if you wish to support the campus.
5. Please speak to your students about keeping our campus clean and being a good ambassador for our school. A big part of our PBIS Motto - "Be a Community Member". If we all take 5 seconds a day to pick up litter, open the door for a friend, follow our rule about no gum or candy in class and show each other respect, our campus becomes even better.
6. Please make sure your student on campus, ready for the learning, on time and focused. We can only teach the students who are in class.
7. We will begin closing the 13th Street and 4th Ave Gates 10 minutes after the first bell in the morning. Parents will be asked to sign their students in on a sheet and students will be given a pass to go directly to class. Missing even 5 minutes of the day adds up - we also hope to have students in class by the end of the tardy bell. Students who are not signed in, will be assumed to be unexcused for their 1st period morning tardy. This means the student will serve lunch detention. After three unexcused tardies, students will be assigned to a Saturday school. Make sure to sign your student in please.
8. We are beginning to track students who are missing class due to numerous requests to leave during classtime. Understand please, 90% of our Middle and K-5 students respect and attend classes for the entire period. We have a very small percentage of students who request to use the restroom every period, get a drink or leave class for another reason. This is severely impacting their learning time. If you have a student who is leaving the class repeatedly, we will be reaching out to make sure there is not a medical reason for numerous trips out of class. This is the reason we put the rule in place that students must use the facilities on the floor the class they are attending is held - if a student is in Science on the 2nd floor, they must use the restroom on the 2nd floor. Please know that this is in order to have our students be present for the entire period (or the most time possible - we know that students need to leave sometimes).
9. Field trip season is coming! Often we need chaperones for the trips. If you are willing to join your student on a trip, please let your students teacher know right away.
10. Even though it is getting colder, students still need water bottles. We cannot continue to provide cups for 300 students a day. Please remind your student to bring their water bottles.
Thank you for all you do to make Safford the best school it can be,
Dr. Katherine Kuhn
Now that is a great group!
Fundrasier at Peter Piper with the amazing Ms. James and Mrs. Ponce
And the winner of the lottery is - Nick!
iReady growth!!!!!!!!!
The third grader is still making huge growth, yet not quite at grade level by the end of the year. The 6th graders will be expected to make grade level! All of our students can make this kind of growth if we keep them moving forward. Please talk to your student and encourage them to make the best effort possible.
