A Message From the Principal
We just completed a wonderful learning experience with our students that culminated in the creation of our classroom Aron Kodesh. By viewing the video below, you can get a glimpse into the process of learning and creating that we undertook in order to complete our Aron Kodesh. This learning experience exemplifies some of what it means to teach at YLS and what it means to be a teacher in a classroom that is created around the question, “what do we know about how children learn?”
Teachers at YLS:
Listen to their students, consider where they are coming from, and design experiences around it.
Are flexible in understanding that standards and skills won’t change, but how we teach them will. For example, our teachers understand that there will not be another Aron Kodesh project next year and that this was a learning experience exclusively for this year and this particular group of students. Next year they will be looking for opportunities to engage students in a different yet similar type of project.
Know they are not always the expert, they need to communicate that to our students, and seek expertise from outside of our school.
Recognize that in order help our students develop religiously we need to break down the barriers between our real world and our school world by going beyond the walls of our classroom and then bring those experiences into school.
Give students a lead role in the design process, regardless of how this might affect the final product, because how it looks is far less important than our students’ ownership.
Take risks without necessarily knowing how a specific learning experience will turn out in the end.
For these reasons, being a teacher at YLS is both extremely rewarding and incredibly hard work. We are grateful and honored that our teachers this year, as well as our incoming teachers for next year, possess these mindsets.
