Hybrid learning update presented to the Board of Education
At last night’s meeting, the administration presented the Board of Education with an update on the hybrid learning model.
Students returned on a rolling basis starting February 1, with our Bridge, Life, Transition, and EL1 students, February 8, with our freshmen, and on February 17, (due to an E-Learning Day February 16), for all remaining students who opted for in-person instruction.
More than 800 students at East, and more than 600 at West are currently attending classes on campus. Teachers are conducting classes in-person and online simultaneously, accommodating the needs of our Leyden families.
“Teachers and staff have been doing incredible work, creating a positive learning environment, and extracurricular student experience, regardless of whether or not a student is on campus or remote,” said Dr. Michael Manderino, Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
As a way to continue to support students during this time, Leyden has begun offering virtual tutoring in the evening, for graduation-required classes. In addition, extended learning opportunities are being utilized to help students successfully complete courses.
“We are currently evaluating the possibility of extending the opportunity for students to attend fully in-person four days per week, should they choose,” said Superintendent Dr. Nick Polyak. “We will be sending a survey home to families the week of March 9 to assess the level of interest in this option.”
Leyden continues the celebration of Black History Month
One of the most popular young adults titles in the Leyden Libraries is Dear Martin by renowned African American writer, Nic Stone. Hear Nic Stone talk about her sequel to this popular novel, Dear Justyce. Listen on NPR
Another popular young adult book checked out of the Leyden Libraries is The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. This book has received much acclaim and has also been made into a motion picture. According to Amazon.com, "It is a heartbreakingly relevant and powerfully moving tale of a teenage girl named Starr who witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. This poignant story depicts the protests, media frenzy and impact that his death has on Starr, her family and her community, and emphasizes the need to speak up about injustices and start conversations on racism, police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement."
Angie Thomas recently came out with the prequel to this book, Concrete Rose. In this book our author revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give.
