TedEd Kids
After watching some educators in San Diego gather a group of students to perform TED Talks, Kelle Hughes was inspired to involve our South Ridge students. As soon as the application through TEDx was accepted, McKenzie Hettman and Kelle began coaching a group of 12 South Ridge students to find their inspiration for TED talks.
These students have been working since January to fine tune their presentations. Their hard work will be showcased in a TedEd Kids South Ridge event on June 4th at Ridgefield High School.
- TedEd Student Talks Showcase at RHS Performing Arts Center from 5-6:30 on June 4th
- Free admission! Concessions available (benefits SRES PTA)
- TedEd Student Talks will be recorded and uploaded to the TedEd Student Talks Youtube Platform this summer, so if people can't make it -- they can still watch and support SRES.

Cinco De Mouse-O
By Judy Cox
Yum! Yum!
A delicious smell wakes up Mouse. He follows his nose down the street to a Cinco de Mayo festival. High up in a tree he spies a pinata magnifica. If only Mouse could get just one piece of candy from it. But look out! Cat is on the prowl. He is planning a fiesta of his own, and Mouse is on the menu.
Social Emotional Activities
Create a glitter jar!
Certain visual stimulation can awaken our senses and calm feelings of anxiety or anger. Watching glitter swirling and floating in a jar of water can encourage children’s self-management, as they learn to pick up their glitter jar and calm their strong emotions with greater independence. While your child grows more practiced in using their glitter jar to manage strong emotions, you can help support them with prompts like these:
- It seems like you are experiencing a big emotion right now. Would you like to take out your glitter jar? When it settles, you might be ready to discuss what happened.
Perhaps your mind is having difficulty focusing right now. How about you take out your glitter jar and take some deep breaths while watching the glitter settle? Let me know when you feel ready to focus again.
You might not have a solution to your problem right now but how about you take out your glitter jar to see if you get any ideas after watching it?
To create your own glitter jar you will need a jar, airtight lid, water, and a bit of glitter. This fun hands-on art activity will last a long time if handled with care, and offer great opportunity for social emotional learning. If you want to avoid the possible mess of a physical glitter jar, you can alternatively find similar effects online. For example, try the Augmented Reality (AR) glitter jar feature on the app, Wisdom: The World of Emotions (iOS, Android).
Grade 3 and 4 State Testing Reminder
State testing at South Ridge Elementary School will take place Monday, May 16, 2022 through May 27, 2022 . Testing will take place first thing in the morning on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of each week.
3rd and 4th graders will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment in ELA and Math.
Preparation and more information will be shared with students from classroom teachers, and school will run on our normal schedule with minimal disruption. Student preparation only requires the following:
A district-issued Chromebook. We are required to upload a secure browser, which can only be uploaded on school issued Chromebooks. Any students who do not have a school-issued Chromebook should do so in preparation for the testing. Our limited supply of extra Chromebooks on campus are for students whose district devices are being repaired.
To request a Chromebook, email the tech department at chromebooks@ridgefieldsd.org. Parents must fill out the user policy prior to a student being issued a Chromebook: Parent Chromebook user form: https://webforms.ridgefieldsd.org/forms/mdca
Please send your student with their headphones/earbuds. Bluetooth airpods/earbuds will not work for testing. We have a limited number of headphones available for check out.
As is requested for daily learning, Chromebooks need to be charged nightly the weeks of May 16th and May 23rd.
It is recommended that students get a good night's sleep prior to testing, and bring snacks as teachers will build in breaks.
Please make sure your student is on time for school daily, as the testing takes place in the morning.
