What's New at KCS?!?
November Student Monthly Challenge:
Students are working hard to Be Kind at KCS! Throughout the month of November and December, students will be recognized for displaying random acts of kindness.
Middle school students are adapting to a change in their schedule this year. All four grade levels are offered a 90-minute block, Wednesday for 5-6 and Friday for 7-8, to work on whatever they need to continue to be successful in their classes. Students are placed with teachers for intervention, reassessment or academic support. If they are caught up with work and do not need extra support, students have the choice to participate in other activities such as a mini field trip, time in the student lounge, art or music study, a library program, and other offerings. We are noticing many students putting forth their best effort to have time for a personalized choice during this block in their schedule.
CrisisGo
This year, Kent Center has implemented a new safety technology to help be prepared to prevent, respond, and recover from all crisis situations. Staff members use their devices to access the CrisisGo app during emergency procedures. It has helped us to streamline attendance procedures, eliminate multiple lines of communication, and simplify our response to emergency situations. Your child(ren) may have shared some changes in our drill activities. We continue to practice these drills on a routine basis to become familiar with our new system. We thank all of the students for their patience!
Grading Practices, Grades 3-8
There are times when standards-aligned content may only be taught once during the marking period and therefore that learning is critical and the assessment of NYP to a student who has not mastered that content is warranted. Teachers will explain this in the comments section on the report card.
Some standards-aligned content and skills may be taught several times throughout the marking period. If there are multiple opportunities to be assessed, the first NYP on a summative can be exempt after the second/third assessment is completed if the student demonstrates proficiency.
If you have any questions about your child(ren)'s report card grades- academic achievement or learning practices, please contact the teacher as soon as possible after receiving the document.
KCS Scholars
- To be identified as a KCS Scholar, students must achieve honor roll status during 8 out of 10 trimesters starting in their fifth-grade year until the end of the first trimester of their eighth-grade year.
- A KCS Scholars awards event will be held each year prior to the January Board meeting. Students and families will be notified to attend in early December.
LunchTime Payment Portal
Parents now have access to the LunchTime system from home! Money can be added to your child(ren)'s lunch account using a credit/debit card or bank account routing number. Once a log-in is created, you can also set up low balance reminders. Directions are linked below for anyone that missed the email.
Parents can still send in cash or check with their child(ren) directly to the cafeteria.
Handbook Reminders
We will officially adjust the wording in the handbook for 2020-2021, but students have been warned that AirPods will fall under the wording in the cell phone policy. These items are not necessary to wear in school and students will be asked to remove them at the front door. Thank you for supporting these procedures at home in conversations with your child(ren).
