Principal's Message
Hello Tubman Families,
We had a wonderful week of learning!
Next week is the final week before winter break. It is a full week of school.
Warmly,
Dr. Cavena Griffith
Principal
Attendance Matters
It is important to make every effort to ensure that your student is present and on time for school each day. Students who attend school for the full day are more likely to be meeting grade level expectations.
When Is My Child Marked Tardy?
Your child is marked tardy if they arrive after our 9:25 bell.
When Is My Child Marked Picked Up Early?
Your child is marked picked up early if they are picked up before our dismissal begins.
What If My Child Is Absent?
- If your child is not in school, they are marked absent; unexcused
- In order to excuse your child's absence, you must send a written note (Dojo or note in backpack) to the office
- If your child is absent 3 or more days, we will need a note from their doctor to excuse their absence
- Traveling is not an excused absence
What About Work Missed?
It is important that your child is in school every day. Teachers are not required to send work home for absences. For extended absences, MCPS assumes that the parent is providing their child with education.
When Will My Child Be Withdrawn?
Students are withdrawn if they are absent for 10 consecutive school days. The parent or guardian must come to the office to re-register the student if this occurs.

A Holiday Message from Our Counselor
Holidays and other special days can be especially challenging for grieving children. Anticipating and acknowledging these days can be a helpful way to promote sharing and communication. Caring Matters' Family Nights are designed for families who have experienced the death of a loved one. Each workshop is held approximately one week prior to a major holiday, so that families can learn coping tools, plan for how they will handle celebrations, and mark the absence of their loved one(s). Activities facilitated by trained volunteers encourage parents and children to create something together to take home, as a way to continue conversations about their loved ones and to help keep their memories alive. Each workshop is designed to be independent of the others, so that families can come to one or more as they choose. Appropriate for families with children ages 5-18.
