A Message From Dr. Waggoner
Let me be one of the first to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! Yes, we are already in November, and the days are becoming shorter and soon the weather will be colder. Many of us will have the opportunity to spend time with our extended families and people who are important in our lives. I used to say that Christmas was my favorite holiday, but it seems as I grow older, Thanksgiving comes to the forefront as a favorite time of year.
So, I would like to use this time to thank all of the people who help make our school lives more meaningful. First, I would like to thank our wonderful PTO and all who support their efforts to help benefit the students. Our school would not be what it is without you.
Next, I would like to thank the terrific staff here at Heatherstone. The teachers, front office staff, cafeteria staff, instructional aides, para-educators, and custodians all work together to make Heatherstone a great place to be on a daily basis. Thanks for being here and making things awesome for the children here. You are true professionals.
Finally, I would like to thank the students and their families. You are why we are here, and it is such a joy to work with each and every one of you.
Have a great November and Thanksgiving break!
Sincerely,
Dr. Ruth Waggoner, Principal

Feeling Thankful
- Heartland Community Church
- Lori Duncan with the Gardens at Creekside Residents
- Five Below
- And several anonymous families
Some students hugged their backpacks, others skipped, and one proclaimed that this would be the best year ever. No matter what a group or individual donates - one backpack, water bottles, or outgrown Heatherstone spirit wear - please know it is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Heather Smith, counselor

Please remember to contact your child's teacher in addition to this sign up. This sign up will simply alert the teacher of your appointment, but a deeper discussion on your involvement in the class as well as participation in activities around the school will result in a richer experience for everyone.
Student Leadership Team
This year, we have a team of about 35 students. The children have helped the school celebrate both Bully Prevention Week and Red Ribbon Week. Students make posters, write and deliver announcements, and even create spirit days and bulletin boards.
Our next meeting is Nov. 14, where we will work on leadership and some small projects in the school. Any student is welcome to share ideas with the team that they think might benefit the community.
New Counseling Curriculum
Each student received a letter explaining the resources related to bully prevention and personal safety. Go online to SecondStep.org and log on with the activation key CPUK FAMI LYGK to find out more information.
If you have any questions or would like to preview grade-level materials, please contact Mrs. Smith.
NEW! Download the Box Tops App
Want to help earn EXTRA box tops and even more money for our school?! There are TWO ways you can help:
- Cut and save Box Tops from participating grocery items and send them to school with your child. Each box top brings in $0.10 for Heatherstone. These add up quickly!
- To get BONUS box tops, download the Box Tops App and register yourself here: http://www.boxtops4education.com/bonusapp. When you register, select Heatherstone as your school. Then just shop, scan, save, repeat. These box tops bring in $0.20 each!
Don't forget to keep clipping box tops and turning them in to school. The digital scanning of box tops is in addition to the traditional clipping and saving of box tops.
Bully Prevention
We were able to bring this hysterical, yet serious, program to Heatherstone thanks to a Kindness Club grant. It aligned perfectly with our expectations related to mean behaviors. At the end of the assembly, it was really cool to see students and staff stand up to pledge to be "difference makers."
Thank you to the Olathe Schools Foundation for the opportunity to have such a quality program that helped kids understand why it is so important to assertively report and refuse bully behavior. Bystander power!
Expected Behavior
- We will not bully others
- We will try to help others who are bullied
- We will try to include students who are left out
- When we know somebody is being bullied, we will report it to an adult
Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose over time.
Recognize. Refuse. Report.
Calling All Photographers!
Please continue to submit photos for the yearbook, especially if you took any photos at last week's fall party. We need all parents who are picture crazy to point, click, and upload pictures to our yearbook storage websites.
We're looking for a variety of pictures, from field trips, class parties, restaurant nights, and even Scouting or sporting events. We can’t use your pictures if you don’t send them in!
Here are instructions on how to upload pictures directly from your phone or computer:
HOW TO UPLOAD FROM YOUR PHONE
- Search for “Balfour Image Share” in your app marketplace and download the app.
- Enter our project number 729135 and password Yearbook.
HOW TO UPLOAD FROM YOUR COMPUTER
- Go to www.box.com.
- Log on using the grade username and password from the section below.
- After logging on, you'll see a folder for each grade and sub-folders for each teacher. Select the folder your photo fits into.
- Any photos that don't fall into a grade or teacher folder should be put into "All Grade Yearbook Pictures" within the "5th Grade and Extras" folder.
- Photos should be clear and of good quality (resolution of 1 MB or higher).
- Please do not upload individual or home photos! Yearbook photos can be taken outside of school (scout meetings, sporting events, etc.) but should be of current Heatherstone students only. Also, make sure there are no dates or other printing on the photo.
- Please upload both vertical and horizontal shots – we can use a variety of both.
