HEMS Hornet Buzz
November 2022
Your input is extremely important!
Community involvement is an important component of effective schools. I appreciate all of the support that Harriet Eddy Middle School receives from our school community. As you may know, I hold the monthly Good Mornings With Gillis to provide information about HEMS and also to garner input from our parents.
I understand that not all of our families can attend these meetings. However, we want to get your thoughts and ideas about the direction of the school. Below is a link to an online survey to get your opinions on school priorities.
Harriet Eddy is seeking your input on what should be top priority considerations when developing the District and Schools’ 2022-2023 Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAP). The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Your input is extremely important to the planning and decision-making processes.

News from the NEST!
Holidays are approaching!
We are halfway through the second quarter and the holiday season is fast approaching. It is a time to spend with family and friends. Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Our Eddy staff is thankful for all of you and all of the efforts you have made in the past year, and continue to make, for your child's academic success and mental health. We appreciate you!
The Elk Grove Unified School District's learning Vision goal is EVERY student learning in EVERY classroom, in EVERY subject, EVERY day (E4). Harriet Eddy believes in this vision and strives to provide all students the opportunities and supports to succeed.
In regard to support, please encourage your student to advocate for themself and speak with their teachers. So often, a teacher will offer support before school, during lunch, and/or after school--if students ask. Please do not allow your student to wait until the last minute to address below-par grades.
It is our belief that every student can succeed and will succeed if they seek out the proper support when needed.
Restorative Practices
To resolve conflict, hold individuals and groups accountable, repair harm and restore positive relationships with students and staff, we employ restorative practices. This helps us to reduce, prevent, and improve harmful behavior. By meeting together with our intervention Teacher, Counseling, and/or Administration, students who have experienced or been a part of a conflict, are given the opportunity to speak with one another to resolve the conflict and if desired, to repair the harm by offering an apology for their actions. This ongoing work is showing a positive outcome on behaviors around campus.
Reminders
- Please continue to monitor your student’s cell phone and social media accounts. After 12 weeks of school, this continues to be the #1 biggest cause of negative behaviors exhibited on campus and in our community.
- When pulling into the drop-off lanes at school, please pull forward as far as possible to reduce vehicles waiting in the street. Do not park in the drop-off loading zone.
- Our lost and found items bin is overflowing! Please ask your student to check the lost and found bin (located in the MP) for items they have left at school such as eyeglasses, cell phones, jackets, sweaters, shoes, and water bottles.
This Month's Good Morning with Gillis Thursday, Nov. 3rd @ 8:45 am
Dr. Wellington from the counseling department will join us to review school transcripts and course requirements and our School Psychologist, Dr. Maureen Schroeder, will discuss stress and anxiety in middle schoolers. We hope you can make it!
