Big picture

Welcome Back to the 2018-19 School Year!

Each month this newsletter will bring you information to highlight the experiences our students have in our school library. We will also inform you of learning resources, new books, reading programs, research projects, tech tips, special events, and other news. We hope our Wanamaker families find this information useful and value any feedback you care to share. Please let us know if we can ever be of any help to you or your student. Enjoy!

Meet the Library Staff

Alice Reinert--Teacher Librarian

Mrs. Reinert begins her fifth year as a teacher-librarian at Wanamaker Elementary. Her favorite part of the position is getting to work with every student and staff member at WE--they are the best! In her free time, she enjoys exercising, traveling, spending time with her family and friends, and of course, reading. She and her husband, Mark, are the parents of 4 grown children--Caitlin (and husband Carl), Austin, Alex, and Claire. They also welcomed their first grandchild this summer, Amelia Catherine!

Jenny Armstrong--Library Assistant

Mrs. Armstrong starts her eighth year as the part-time library assistant at Wanamaker Elementary. We share her with Indian Hills Elementary where she is also the library assistant. She says the best part of her job is getting to interact with the students. In her free time, she enjoys Jazzercise, watching TV and movies, and spending time with her husband and kids. She and her husband, Jeff, are the parents of three children--Lanee, Ellie, and Rylan.

Kansas Book Festival

September 8, 2018

The 8th annual Kansas Book Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kansas State Capitol. The presenting authors will be inside the Capitol building, and the vendors/entertainment/children's activities/book signings will be set up outside the Capitol, on the North side by the new Visitor's Center. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity for a fun literary experience for the whole family!

Summer Reading Celebration

The students completing the summer reading program at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library were treated to an ice cream sundae and brownie party last week. Alyssa was also the winner of the Barnes and Noble gift card drawing! It was a great way to end the week and to celebrate summer reading!

Mrs. Reinert Goes to nErDcamp!

In early July I attended NerdCamp, a literacy conference that takes place each summer in Parma, Michigan. As one of 1,600 teachers and librarians that participated in the 2-day conference, it was exciting to be a part of an event with so much passion for books and literacy! Over 50 well known authors and illustrators presented and were on hand to answer questions, take pictures, sign autographs, and most importantly, to share their wonderful stories. Many of these same authors'/illustrators' books are found on our own library shelves. One of the highlights was author and keynote speaker Dav Pilkey, creator of the Dog Man and Captain Underpants series. His speech was inspiring and motivational. I shared the details of it with our students during their library classes last week. The whole experience made me proud to be part of the education profession and reaffirmed my appreciation of literacy as a vital component of our students' educations.
