News to share....
Dress Policy- Our dress policy states that students can begin wearing shorts after spring break. Please keep in mind that our building tends to be on the chilly side. Students may want to wear layers for a little while. Also, the revised policy states that students need to wear sandals WITH backs. We have had a lot of skinned toes and mulch accidents with students wearing flip-flops. It has become a safety risk for students on the playground and going up and down stairs. Please keep flip-flops at home.
Field days- We will be organizing both a primary and intermediate field day for our students. More information will be coming home soon, but we may be looking for volunteers to come out and have some fun with us. This will be the last few days of school.
Last days: Although not official until our Board of Education votes on it at the April board meeting, but it is being recommended that student's last day of school will be Wednesday, May 24th.
5th grade promotion: We have scheduled our 5th grade promotion evening for Monday, May 22nd @ 6:00. We invite all of our 5th grade families to join us in celebrating our children, and their accomplishments. Refreshments will be served following.
Volunteer Luncheon- Our annual volunteer celebration will be held on May 16th beginning at 11:00. This is an opportunity for us to say THANK YOU for all that our volunteers have done for us. If you have volunteered in any way, chaperoning, classroom, etc. you will be receiving an invite to join us. Looking forward to seeing you again.
K-prep Testing; We've had several parents ask when our state testing will begin for our 3rd- 5th graders. Tentatively it will be Tuesday, May 9th through Monday, May 15th. Make-ups for students who may have been absent will be May 16th- May 18th. We are encouraging perfect attendance during this time so that no student has to be taken out of classes for makeup testing. Most of the testing is during the morning until afternoon. More information will be shared in May.
Saying Farewell: We have a couple of teachers that are retiring and 1 that is moving from us. We want to let our New Haven families know that Mrs. Beasley (special education), Mrs. Osborne (1st grade), and Mrs. Hutchison (para-educator) will be retiring at the end of this school year. Mrs. Jones (STEM teacher) will be moving with her family to Seattle. All will be unbelievably missed.
Repeats to Remember....
17-18 Placements
We have amazing teachers at New Haven, who all have a variety of strengths. I feel very strongly about the high expectations of teaching and learning, and the expertise of our teachers. I also know, as a teacher, that we all have different strengths and qualities that contribute to the success of the team. All grade levels are expected to work as a team allowing for all students to have the same experiences. Each teacher brings to the table an unique teaching style guided with the same standards. We take all of this into consideration as we begin to plan for the following year. Creating class lists really is a complex process because we look at, and consider many different criteria. We look at male / female ratios, achievement, needs (academic, social, emotional, etc), in addition to several other things. It is not a random process, but we also understand that sometimes there are other factors that need to be considered. We do not accept requests for specific teachers. Do not feel like you have to submit a request, I just am sharing what our procedure is for those that have had questions.
So what does this mean?
We need you to be an integral part of your child's success throughout the year. You are their first teacher, and see something's that we do not. We will be accepting placement requests from parents this year; however; the requests will follow specific guidelines that will allow us to make the best match for student success. Requests are not guarantees, nor will all requests be honored. Ultimately it will be about creating the best learning environment for everyone, while trying to match the qualities that best meet your child's needs.
Request letters must:
- Explain what specific academic or social needs your child has.
- What qualities / characteristics in a teacher would best meet the needs of your child?
- Address other concerns if applicable to placement. (ex: health, personality conflicts, etc.)
- Be turned in to Mrs. Goble no later than Friday, April 28th. (Can be written or by email) mary.goble@boone.kyschools.us
