- 6: Teachers routinely monitor student engagement in reading and writing texts using the SEI* and use the data to conference with students in order to increase engagement. See Collecting Data below.

Collecting Data
1. reading engagement
2. reading fluency
3. print work/decoding
4. reading comprehension
5. conversation
SEI* Serravallo Engagement Inventory
- Used to record behaviors as students read.
- Scan the room in 3-5 minute intervals. Look at each child for about 3 seconds and record what they are doing at that time.
- Note avoidance behaviors or activities in #5 on the Needs Assessment.
- Reading, writing, conferring, or researching for authentic purposes equals engagement.
SEIs
Try to complete a few SEIs between now and our December 1/2 days. We will look at how to analyze them further and set goals for engagement. Let me know if you want me to come and show you how to complete one.
