Martin Luther King

''I have a dream''

Behind the News

50 years ago an American civil rights activist named Martin Luther King made a speach which made an impact all over the world. He wanted peace and harmony for all people. he wanted peace for people that were black or white. He wanted everyone to be equal. He said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”

He did very well at school, but at that time there was a lot of racism. Black people weren't allowed to sit with white people, they had to sit at the back of buses and they weren't allowed to eat in the same room as white people. Black people weren't treated poorly. They were treated horribly...

But then it all changed. He made his speach that not only influence people in America, but influenced people from all over the world. Charles Perkins was an Aboriginal rights activist. When he heard the speach he started protests for Aboriginal rights. Martin Luther King also protested. In one protest he got arrested and put in jail. As soon as he got out he made his speach that has influenced the world. One of them was Nelson Mandela. He had a similar story. There are many other people that have influence states, countries and even the world.
