3rd Grade Thinkers!
November 27, 2018
Our Virtue for the next two weeks is PATIENCE!
Patience is quiet hope and trust that things will turn out right. You wait without complaining. You are tolerant and accepting of difficulties and mistakes. You picture the end in the beginning and persevere to meet your goals. Patience is a commitment to the future.
Here are some questions to discuss with your child regarding patience:
- When do you find it hard to be patient?
- What can you do to be patient when someone is late.
- Name three things you can do now that will help you to have an excellent career.
- What would help you be more patient with family members.
- What are seeds doing now when they are underground and we can't see them?
- What do seeds need in order to grow?
- What do you need in order to grow your patience?
Thanks for your support!
ELA (English Language Arts) - Wonders
Dear Family Member:
This week our class will focus on traditions. We will talk about how our traditions can teach us about different cultures.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.
Word Workout
- Words to Know: context clues Help your child describe a birthday party for the United States using this week’s vocabulary words. You will talk about why it would be different from other birthday parties.
- Spelling/Phonics: short vowels e, o, u Your child is going to name the letter that stands for the vowel he or she hears when you read a word from the list. Then your child will spell the word.
Comprehension: sequence
You will read a story about a boy who builds a model of the first Thanksgiving. Help your child follow the order of events in the story. Then your child will number the events in the correct order to show what happened in the story.
Science and Social Studies
We have begun our study of the continent of Europe! Each student will pick one European country to study. This is a great opportunity for families to discuss their ethnicities and traditions with their children.
We will be comparing cultures of America and the country of your child’s choice. Each student will be completing a culminating project of their choice that they will present to the class, and may need some help from you! Students may choose from the following:
Students will cook something from their country at home and bring it in to share with the class.
Students will learn a game or song from their country and teach it to us at school.
You pick! Be creative! We’ve had a number of students share fun family traditions with us here at school.
We will pick a couple of dates for students to choose from to present. We will monitor research progress and let you know the dates in a couple of weeks. The presentations will happen before Christmas break. Students will also be making a travel brochure about their country. Thank you for your support and please let us know if you have any questions!
