Reading/Literacy
This week in literacy we are reading the book The Bat Boy and His Violin and discussing how to tell what a character really wants based on their actions. Next week we will be listening to a story about a little girl and her name. We will use this story to practice our new skill, Accountable Talk. That is, we will be practicing how to have respectful conversations where we may agree or disagree with each other.
Math
This week in math we continued working on mastering equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. Your child also took their 2nd MAP test. Check in with them to see how they did. Ask them if they met their goal. We will be setting new goals next week once we get all of the data in.
Next week we will be focusing on comparing and ordering fractions. A great way to compare fractions is to get in the kitchen with your child and cook or bake something. As you are using the measuring utensils, you can talk about which fraction is bigger and why. After the item comes out of the oven and you go to cut it, talk about the way you cut it. Many times the students get confused when the denominator is bigger, but the fraction is actually smaller. The more we cut a cake, brownies, or pizza, the more pieces we get, which makes the fractions smaller. Have fun, learn together, and create memories.
Science
We will be finishing up fossils and then on to rocks and minerals, volcanoes and earthquakes.
Weathering and Erosion are also a part of the cycle that rocks and minerals go through.
We look forward to some explosions!!!!!!!!!!
