KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Happy Winter, Kindergarten Families!
It has been a great few months in K-Land!
Reading: In our reading groups, we have been moving right along with learning reading strategies when we come to a word we don’t know.
We are becoming Sight Word Wizards as we learn a new word each day in a “snap”! We are finishing up the last 2 sets of our Sight Words! We will then continue working with chunks and vowels. We have been working a lot with vowels! We have learned that long vowels “say their name” and short vowels “say their special sound”.
Math: We finished up a unit that had us practicing combinations of 5 and addition and subtraction story problems. We will start learning about measurement! We started to use nonstandard units of measurement (cubes, feet, & craft sticks) to measure various objects and compare their measurements. We will discuss that when we measure, we must start at one end and go to the other end in a straight line. We must make sure that there are no spaces.
Writing: Our goal was to make our stories easy to read in this unit. We worked really hard remembering to make spaces between our words, write all the sounds we hear, and make sure our words match the pictures. We also learned that the middle of the story is the “juicy” or really good part, just like a cheeseburger! It should have details and make the reader want to read more! Finally, we learned that every story needs an ending. We talked about how adding the “inside” part of a story can tell a feeling and is a good way to end our story.
Science: We have just begun our Forces and Motion Problem Based Learning (PBL) Unit. Our unit aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards. Students will teach about a topic they know something about by writing a how-to book. They will also learn some strategies on how to read nonfiction. During our journey we will be researching different ways objects can be moved, identify and problem solve how to move objects, and learn to plan and carry out investigations to answer questions and test solutions to problems!

Illness and Recess
- Your child doesn’t feel well enough to take part in normal activities, (feeling overly tired, fussy or won’t stop crying).
- The illness is on this list and staying home is recommended.
- Fever: Keep your child home until the temperature has been below 100 degrees for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Motrin.
- Vomiting/Diarrhea: Keep your child home at least 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea and able to tolerate regular food.
- Cough: if severe, wheezing or uncontrollable, please seek medical attention. Cough drops may be dispensed if provided by the parent and a note is written.
- Strep Throat: The child may return to school after being on antibiotics for 24 hours and/or a note from physician.
- Conjunctivitis “pink eye”: If a child’s eyes are clear and on antibiotic eye drops for 24 hours he or she can return to school. A note from your physician is suggested.
**Remember, the best way to prevent the spread of infection is through good hand washing.
BE PREPARED FOR OUTDOOR PLAY
We have officially felt the frigid temperatures of winter hit us! Just an important reminder that students will be going outdoors each day when it is 32 degrees and above. Please be sure that students are sent with a warm coat and accessories for outdoor play. In addition, please monitor the clothing and shoes being worn as well so that outfits are seasonally appropriate. Thank you!
