Summary

The Hobbit book starts when it introduces Bilbo, and how he soon became to know Gandolf, Thorin, and the dwarves. Bilbo is confused on whether he should take the journey Gandolf gave him, or if he should turn down the journey to get the dwarves gold back. Bilbo later on agrees to go on the journey. They gradually soon head off on their journey of getting the dwarves gold back from the mean ole' dragon Smaug. When they get to the mountains they later on find Smaug. In the moment of this, Smaug was soon killed, and the treasure went back to it's original owner. Everyone soon claims a reward for helping Bilbo and the others on their journey. In the end, Bilbo and the ones who didn't get killed while on the journey returned back home.

Favorite Characters

Theme

The theme in this book is an ordinary person turning into a hero. Even though you may not be the richest or the prettiest, an normal/ordinary person can do just as much stuff as a person that is rich or gets their way through life with their looks, you are capable of doing anything they can do if you push yourself and put in hard work.

The Ordinary World

Bilbo's life is split on one side of his family they are adventurous(Took's) ,and then the other half of his family is non-adventurous(Baggins). He is simple and seen as a regular hobbit. Bilbo chooses to live a normal life despite half of his family being unlike any other hobbit.

The Call To Adventure

The call comes to Bilbo when Gandolf suddenly brings Thorin and the dwarves to his house. The dwarves need Bilbo to capture their gold back for them, since a dragon named Smaug captured the gold from the dwarves. Gandolf decides to choose Bilbo to take on this journey and claim the gold for the dwarves.

Refusal Of The Call

When the refusal of the call comes to Bilbo he deny's it because adventures are not what normal hobbits go out and do. Bilbo is unsure about the adventure and what others will think if he decides to go on the journey.

Meeting With The Mentor

Bilbo's mentor in the hobbit is Gandolf, because Gandolf was right by Bilbo's side every single step of the journey. He choose Bilbo because Gandolf felt Bilbo was bolder than the other hobbit's, and he needed someone that would take on the journey.

Cross The Threshold

The crossing of the threshold was when Gandolf was shoving Bilbo out the door and out of the Shire. This led to Bilbo leaving his comfortable hobbit hole an beginning the journey by stepping into the other world.

Tests, Allies, and Enemies

Tests: stealing treasure from the trollslater, the goblins, Golem, spiders, and woodelves.

Allies: the eagles, Beorn, the wood elves, the humans of laketown

Enemies: goblins, wolves

The Approach

Bilbo, the dwarves, Gandalf, and other company meet the approach when they finally come to the Lonely Mountain or the Mountain and find a hidden door right before sundown comes their way.

Ordeal

Bilbo encounters a life-or-death problem with Smaug. Bilbo first approaches Smaug and talk to him about stuff and eventually getting the dwarves gold back. Later in the book, Bard also encounters Smaug unexpectedly and kills him.

Reward

Everyone that went on the journey with Bilbo got some of the treasure that Smaug had stolen. Thoren gets to claim the Arkenstone, the Elven-King gets a necklace from Bilbo, and everyone else got a share as well.

The Road Back

Bilbo heads home with Gandalf, and Beorne is with them as well for a while. They take their time going back and Bilbo is giving his Took side a break and getting back his Baggins.

Resurrection

Bilbo returns back to the hill and goes back to being a Baggins again like normal, and the Took part of him gradually goes away.

Return With The Elixir

Bilbo's items are given away because most people assume he has past away. However, Bilbo gets most of his items back and returns to living an ordinary life. Eventually, Gandolf and Balin decide to come and visit and they review all of their fun times that they had together on the journey.
