SIEC Notes
Southern Indiana Education Center Winter '16/'17 Newsletter
From our director...
Many of you, superintendents, principals, teachers have heard me speak of the concept of collective efficacy, how important it is and how important it is for us all at this time, in our lives as educators. It's doing what we know is right for our students, our teachers, our district leaders and our communities. Establishing a culture of efficacy implies that we are successful in spite of the barriers before us...that we have the capacity to do that. The outcomes, should this be accomplished, can only mean that we are simply happier in our work...that we are now taking the actions that feel right to us and that we will all be better for it.
Please see our latest offering for teachers: Teachers Supporting Teachers Network Dinner The goal here was very simple - create a space and time for teachers across the SIEC region to build camaraderie, to enjoy one another, to think about what makes us happy in our professions and to cultivate that in an ongoing fashion. SIEC is incurring the cost of the venue and any presenters and supplies for activities and such. There is a minimal fee for participants to help provide dinner.
We hope large numbers turn out for this! We are excited to provide the opportunity. ~Judy

Tips for SIEC Workshop Registration
- The SIEC registration forms are Google forms and can all be located on the SIEC Workshop page: www.siec.k12.in.us/workshops or directly on most of our flyers. Be sure you complete the SIEC Google form associated with that workshop when registering.
- If someone else says they are going to register you, be sure they have! You should receive an automatic confirmation via e-mail immediately after registering and another confirmation approximately one week prior to the session. Completing a permission form within your school district DOES NOT complete your registration process and is separate from the SIEC registration.
- It is important to include YOUR home phone or cell number on the form. With winter weather approaching, we use these numbers in case of emergency postponements or (heaven-forbid) cancellations.
- Payment is not due until your school is invoiced. You can either e-mail or call the office and let us know of other payment arrangements if you would like.
If you are waiting for permission from your district for a workshop and you're under a time crunch, go ahead and register through the SIEC registration process. If you end up not getting permission, simply call or e-mail the office ASAP to cancel your registration. It is best to secure a spot rather than finding out there isn't room because you had to wait. (Also, helps prepare our lunch count.)
If you need to cancel, there is a workshop cancellation policy posted on our website, but for this newsletter, here are some pointers: 1) You must cancel by the workshop deadline to avoid workshop charges. If you don't see a deadline posted, assume the deadline is 2 business days prior to the workshop, 2) If you cancel later than 2 business days before, you will be responsible for a partial workshop fee to cover materials and food, 3) If you fail to notify the SIEC office about your absence, then your district will be charged the full workshop fee.

Indiana Region 4 Migrant Center News
Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow: Building Momentum in Migrant Education
Early Learning
This fall our younger students have been actively involved in our preschool at Vincennes. We partner with VanGo for most of our children to transport them to school in the mornings and home again in the late afternoons. Our young ones are awake and on the bus before it’s light outside so they often take a nap in the afternoon at school. We also partner with VCSC and Sodexo to provide our meals each day. The children have breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack which are always fresh and nutritious. We had a very successful parent night engaging our students in sharing their school activities with their families.
We were very excited to welcome Peter Balonon-Rosen of the Indiana Public Broadcasting service to spend a day with us at preschool in October. The story shared on Indiana’s public broadcasting stations is in the link below. Please feel free to read and listen to the story through the download link as you enjoy some pictures from the day. We also just found out the the National Public Broadcasting association picked up the story and is currently running the story! See the link to the print and audio story below:
Schools Hustle To Reach Kids Who Move With The Harvest, Not The School Year
Education for Students K-12
Our schools in this 16 county region are very busy including the migrant students in classes and activities within their schools. We work closely with the schools to provide support in needed areas including supplies for students and after-school tutoring sites. As our students move away from Indiana, we work to connect with the next schools they attend, mainly in Texas, Georgia and Florida. Transferring student records is a very important step toward making sure students gain all possible credits.
Out-Of-School Youth
The efforts of many people paid off as our region was recognized as the first mobile Plaza Comunitaria in the United States. This honors our programming in online courses with our older students wanting to gain education from Mexico. The IN DOE ran this story on their Facebook page on September 23rd. Debbie
