The history of the ASPCA is a very interesting one. The ASPCA is almost 150 years old and is perhaps the most interesting US department.
The ASPCA was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh
Bergh was born in 1813, the son of a wealthy and well respected ship builder
In 1863 Bergh was appointed to a diplomatic post at the Russian court of Czar Alexander the 2nd
It was there Bergh began to take notice of “man’s inhumanity towards animals”
Henry Bergh then En route back to America, stopped in London where he consulted the Earl of Harrowby
The Earl of Harrowby was President of England’s version of the ASPCA, which was founded in 1840
Henry Bergh then went back to New York to spread the word
Finally in 1866, after coercing Politian’s and speaking many times the ASPCA was formed
