Kia ora
It is hard to believe we are already half way through the year and end of term is almost upon us.
Thank you to all whanau who have been vigilant in keeping students home if they have been unwell, we too have had a number of disruptions at school with sick staff and some classes have had to have been split due to lack of relievers in the area.
Farewell
This will be the last newsletter for the term and as such we farewell two staff members:
Kariann Michalski-Treanor, our art teacher. Kariann will be missed but a young family and living out of town has created pressures she must now address, so we farewell her next Friday.
We have also farewelled Vanessa Griessel, our release teacher. We thank Vanessa for her input and skill in delivering our digital component of the curriculum.
We wish both Kariann and Vanessa well into the future.
Both positions are currently advertised in the Education Gazette, closing next Wednesday.
Vacancy
We also have a cleaner vacancy, working 1 1/2 hours daily term time only, with accumulated hours over holiday breaks. If this sounds like something you might be interested in please contact the school office for a job description and application form.
This vacancy closes next Wednesday July 1st.

Acting Principal
THANK YOU...
Now that we have all returned to school, it’s very much (almost) back to normal as far as teaching and learning goes which is pleasing.
Also pleasing is the data and positive feedback the school received from the Education Review Office (ERO), who invited Hawera Intermediate to take part in a post-Covid research project. This feedback indicated that our teachers’ engagement with our students during the Covid restrictions was very high as was the work output from our students. Well done to you all.
As the community consultation process around the potential future of schooling in Hawera of students aged from Year 7 to Year 13 was also interrupted by Covid-19, this will now be completed by sometime early next Term.
Along with the Board, I will soon recommence the recruitment process for the appointment of the school’s next permanent principal. This position will likely start from Term 4, 2020 or earlier by arrangement. As this process is undertaken you will be kept informed of progress.

Limited Statutory Manager
Hawera Intermediate School
An essential component
of the Year 7 and 8 curriculum is education around Puberty. We choose to do this as two separate teaching components. The first will be next week and is described below. All girls will receive purse packs of sample products, thanks to U by Kotex and the Ministry of Education. The second part will be in early Term Four and is linked to Life Education with a focus on keeping ourselves safe and social relationships.
It is your choice whether your child participates in these lessons. On Monday students were given a notice. This is to be returned should you prefer to educate them yourself in this area, alternative arrangements will be made for them. If you would like more information please contact Jill Trigg Curriculum Leader or Liz Stewart Health and PE Leader.

You may have noticed changes
at our Road Patrol lately, including smart new signs! It is great to have these very light signs which make our job so much easier! We appreciate the support of Senior Constable Jono Erwood in his role as School Support Officer for the Police in being available to our school for advice and support, and particularly on Friday when he spent the morning training our Road Patrollers. It was a very interesting session where Glenn Heather (Teacher in charge of Road Safety) felt that our patrollers were well set up for their responsibility and he himself was refreshed about some procedures. It will be great to see our student patrollers officially out on duty keeping our community safe as of next week, as we have had staff doing it up till now. Please be patient, and supportive, and stop if you are going through while they are out - it is a pedestrian crossing and it is the law!
It is also a great time for a couple of reminders:
- You will be ticketed if you are parked on the yellow lines outside the school - they are there to ensure our road patrollers can see clearly and operate safely. Police will be out and about supporting road safety and watching for this over the next few weeks, across our town, as tired students work their way toward the end of the term.
- All students must use the pedestrian crossing, South Road is very dangerous and running across near the dairy is very unsafe - even if a parent car is there. An extra two minutes to cross safely may save a life!
Thank you for your support,as they say 'it takes a village to raise a child' and if we are all aware of road safety our children will be a lot safer.
