Gator Bites 2015-16

Info from SC's first EL Education High School #WeAreCREW

Gator Bites - Week of December 14, 2015

What to expect of Gator Bites

We will use this digital platform this year to communicate current and upcoming events and information for all stakeholders interested in River Bluff High School. We will post and send out each week to communicate with you. Go Gators!

Gators of the Week - Work hard. Get smart. Do good.

Gators of the Week: Brandon Tillmon competes as River Bluff's first Shrine Bowl player

Work hard. One of only 44 players chosen from South Carolina, Brandon Tillmon will compete this week and weekend at the Shriner's North and South Carolina Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in Spartanburg, SC. Brandon is the first player from River Bluff to ever be chosen to compete in this all star game. He is a Liberty University commitment to play both football and baseball next year. While Brandon played QB for RB the past three years, he will line up on the defensive side of the ball for the SC team and compete there in college. Good luck to Brandon this week.

Gators of the Week: Teacher Cadets support ESOL students at RB

Get Smart: Ms. Moore and Ms. Thauberger have partnered to allow Teacher Cadets time to develop their craft of teaching and connect with ESOL students at RB. This is a great example of two teachers in collaboration to support students at RB.

Gators of the Week: CREWs give back to Ella Stuff a Stocking

Do good. All CREWs this past week during our case study on service and compassion have adopted a child less fortunate and will be providing gifts for them for Christmas. Ms. Powlas's CREW made a recent shopping trip and were humbled by their experience to give back. Great job Gators!

Long Beach High School, NY Sends Supplies to RBHS

Nike Work Based Learning Center Serves RBHS and SC Flood Victims

The name of the school is the Nike Work-Based Learning Center, an alternative high school setting within the Long Beach Public School District on Long Island. It will be three years ago this coming Thursday when the town of Long Beach was decimated by Hurricane Sandy. Recently, a fried to our Counselor Dr. Vacchio, had kept an eye on my social media presence and on the news, and he had reached out to RB to see how the Nike Center could help with our local flood relief efforts.

The school's administrator Mr. Howard Fuchs, classmate and teammate to Dr. Vacchio, set a goal twofold: for Nike WBL Center to establish and maintain a lasting relationship with RBHS and to help with fundraising and donation efforts in our area. Pictures below show the fruits of this labor. SC and RBHS is eternally indebted to the service of the students at this high school and look forward to a long term relationship.

EL Design Principle in Action

The Having of Wonderful Ideas

Teaching in Expeditionary Learning schools fosters curiosity about the world by creating learning situations that provide something important to think about, time to experiment, and time to make sense of what is observed.

Hats off to the CREW design team for creating such an amazing learning experience for Senior CREWs in the IMPACT conference, tackling the question; "How can I be a better local to global citizen".
