The Roadrunner Report

Yokayo Elementary School

MS. MILANI'S PRINCIPAL NOTE: Welcome Back to School!

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are so glad that you are a ROADRUNNER! You are part of an exceptional community that is dedicated to the success of children. Our staff is dedicated, passionate, and caring who make learning in a healthy, safe environment a priority. We pride ourselves in making personal connections and getting to know each child's needs and supporting them through their learning and growing process.

I am excited for the start of a new school year, it has always been one of my favorite times of the year. We will be coming back with guidelines that have been provided by CDC and CDPH. Students will need to wear a mask while they are in the classroom. While they are outside playing or eating, they will not be required to wear one. There is no social distancing guidelines, although at an elementary school we are always asking students to maintain their personal space.

Communication, like every year, is the key to our success. It is vital that you log into the Aeries Parent Portal and update, or for new students, to create your student's information account. This information is how you will receive important information from Yokayo Elementary and UUSD. Teachers will reach out to you by email, phone, or by other means in order to keep you connected to your child's classroom. Please reach out as soon as you have any issues, concerns, or positive feedback.

This year we will be back to our regular school hours. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday students will be in school from 8:00-2:16 and on Wednesday's from 8:00-1:25. Campus will be open at 7:30 to allow students the chance to play and socialize prior to class beginning. It is important that students are on-time every day. As always, if your child is absent from class please call the office at 472-5690. Absences and frequent tardies will be followed up by Franny DeFatte our Attendance Secretary or our new Family/Community Liaison Glen Robles.

The Yokayo Community welcomes and values your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education. We look forward to continuing to build our partnerships with parents. There are many ways to stay connected and involved. Yokayo's PTA is a strong group of dedicated individuals who would welcome and appreciate your time and input. We also have our English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings that you can attend for information.

Please download our Yokayo Elementary School App. It will send notifications and keep you up to date with school events. Our Roadrunner Report will now be sent out monthly instead of weekly. Weekly classroom bulletins will be provided by each classroom teacher. You also have access to our Parent Handbook that contains all information related to Yokayo. All of this information will be found at our main hub of communication, the Yokayo Elementary Website at

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, positive feedback, ideas, or concerns you have. Contact our Site Secretary, Michelle Arnerich, at 472-5690 if you would like to make an appointment with me. You can also email me at Your involvement with our school makes your child's educational experience that much stronger. I am looking forward to a successful school year!

Character Counts! and our Positive Behavior Intervention System

The SIX Pillars of Character

We like to say that Roadrunners are TRRFCC! At Yokayo we have an exceptional positive behavior system that is grounded in character education. Character Counts is a school-wide program that develops our six pillars of character that includes Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. We actively teach and refer to these traits daily and recognize students who have shown these traits at school.

School Safety Guidelines and Procedures

Returning to School

Yokayo will still be abiding by all health and safety guidelines set forth from the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Education.

  • Students and Staff will wear masks while inside of any building. They will not wear them during lunch or recess times.
  • Strict cleaning procedures for the classrooms will remain in effect and cleaning will take place daily in every classroom.
  • Parents and guardians will still not be allowed to come onto campus unless you are coming to the Main Office only.
  • Student pick-up and drop-off will look the same prior to the pandemic with the exception of picking students up at their classroom or on campus. You can meet your child at a specific place designated by your family. We will have a designated place to pick up if arrangements haven't been made by families. It will be by the parent pick-up/drop-off area along side Room 18 and signs will be posted. You may also drive through the parent pick-up/drop-off area, or students can walk home. For safety reasons please make sure that your child is never walking home alone.
  • If your child has any symptoms, such as a cough or a fever, please keep them home and call the school office at 472-5690 to let them know of your child's absence.
  • Please refer to UUSD Safety Guidelines and Procedures or the Yokayo Elementary Site Specific Safety Guidelines and Procedures for more detailed information. Links to these documents can be found on our website at
