Principal's Corner

Hello Emerson Families,

Please take a moment to read through this week’s newsletter! Have a wonderful weekend!

Second Step Lessons

Our Second Step program supports students with the social-emotional skills that developing adolescents may need as they move through their middle school years. Last month, we learned about self-awareness and regulation. Topics included how to recognize escalation in emotions and how to use self-calming strategies. This month’s lesson, on March 6th, will focus on strategies for stopping harassment. The 7th grade lesson defines gender identities and strategies for stopping gender harassment at school or in the community. The 8th grade lesson defines the effects of sexual harassment in school, and how to deal with sexual harassment when it occurs. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Staff/Student Basketball Game

On Friday, March 6th, Emerson will be hosting its annual Staff/Student Basketball Game at 3:15pm in the Gym. We are combining this event with supporting the Park Ridge Newcomers Labor of Love 2020 Recipients, Olivia and Sara, who are both graduates of Emerson. Olivia and Sara’s father has been absent for most of their lives and their mother, a Polish immigrant, died suddenly in 2016.

Here is how YOU can we can Make Magic Happen to keep the two sisters in our community:

*Students can purchase wristbands during lunch starting on Wednesday 2/26. Wristbands cost $3 each or 2/$5. When students come to the basketball game, they will receive a raffle ticket for each wrist band purchased.

*Parents can attend the Student/Staff basketball game on Friday 3/6—it’s a spirited event! Cash donations for Olivia and Sara will be accepted here.

*Families can also donate online through this link. Any donation amount will help to Make Magic Happen!: https://www.gofundme.com/f/make-magic-happen-for-olivia-and-sara

Calling all Career Professionals!

Emerson Middle School, in association with Junior Achievement, is seeking passionate professionals to come out and speak to their 8th grade students. No experience is required! Speak to students about your industry and career journey. This is a great way to connect with the future work force and to really give young people true insight to your industry. Show them what’s possible and give back to your community by becoming a volunteer. We are seeking volunteers from a broad range of industries (information technology, food services, business, health services, etc.) to come speak with our students so they can learn about the vast career possibilities.

When: Wednesday, April 15th, 2020 Time: 8:00 AM - 11:10 AM (multiple presentations about 25 minutes in length each)

Interested?: Contact Daniel White at dwhite@jachicago.org with your name, job title, and industry. Please note that not all volunteers who express interest may be selected based on the number of volunteer slots available.

Queen of Hearts Fundraiser

The current jackpot is over $12,600! The Emerson and Lincoln PTO Queen of Hearts 50/50 raffle will raise money to equally benefit the students and staff at both Emerson and Lincoln Middle Schools. The next drawing is Tuesday, March 3rd at 9pm at Harp & Fiddle.

March Notes from the Gym…

The start of March marks the end of Emerson’s Badminton, Pickleball, Archery, and Bowling units. 7th and 8th grade students worked on concentration, object manipulation, and hand - eye coordination during their rotations through Badminton and Archery. Our 6th graders worked on all the same skills during their Pickleball and Bowling units. In addition, all students were able to enhance muscular and cardiovascular endurance levels while working out on Emerson’s new airbikes in the Fitness Center.

Next up? Dance! Starting March 2nd, students at all grade levels will be choosing work groups and creating Rhythmic Routines while following detailed instructions and scoring rubrics. We can’t wait to see what their creative minds come up with!

No time to rest! Our gyms are still active EVEN AFTER 3:00! The 2020 Emerson Hoops for Heart Tournament has been running for 2 weeks and will be finishing up soon. Over twenty teams participated in this year’s tournament raising over $800.oo to be donated directly to The American Heart Association. Emerson’s 6th, 7th, and 8th grade champions for both girls and guys will be taking on Lincoln Middle School’s champions in the Emerson Gym from 3:00 to 4:00 on Thursday, March 5th.

SO EXCITING!
